    Fishing areas
    Before the french regime, europeans sailed over the ocean to fish. SOmetimes this can cause conflict with aboriginal tribes. These conflicts can end peacefully or not.

    French regime
    The economy in New-France was based on fur trade. Insufficiently dense population, required the Natives alliance to do the hunting. The search for more furs expanded the borders of New-France. The establishment of trading posts founded towns such as Quebec and Three Rivers.

    Alliances with certain aboriginal groups meant that the the british and french were sometimes pulled into war by the aboriginals and vice versa. It also meant that certain groups couldn't trade with one another.

    The company of 100 associates was a french fur trading company in New France. They were given the task of populating New France and in return the monopoly of trading there by the king of France. In the end the, the king's plan didn't work because the population was kept small and mostly male and the company almost completely ignored the obligation of developing and population the land.

    New France started small but expanded to become large, the problem was that the population was small. Its only purpose was to export natural resource (furs) back to France. The 13 colonies didn't grow very much but their population was high, they mainly focuses on farming and trading.

    Mercantilism is a way for the king to make the most amount of money possible. \the french did this by shipping the furs to france, treating them, making finished products with them, and selling some of them there and then shipping some back to New France to be sold there. This way the king could receive more taxes.

    People only farmed as much as they needed for their families. Jean Talon attempted to diversify the economy, but the fur trade was strong and there weren't many people with other skills.

    In the English regime, the economy in Canada was based on timber. England needed timber to build ships and other things but their main source of wood was blocked off by Napoleon.
    This created new jobs such as lumberjacks, loggers, and sawmills. And also improved and developed the transportation methods.
    The fur trade declined.

    The overpopulation of seigneuries led to the opening up of new regions. The timber industry also led to the `development of new areas.

    The blockade by Napoleon in 1806 and the rise in the demand for timber caused the british to collect there timber from Quebec. This was followed by the creation of the Bank of Montreal in 1817 to allow people to invest and obtain credit. Opened new jobs: lumberjack, loggers, sawmills. And led to the Improvement and development of transportation: canals, railroads, steamships.

    In 1878 John A. Macdonald came up with three policies to help the canadian economy. These policies are known as the national policies. -Increase Custom Duties: Protect/Promote Canadian Industries by ensuring Canadians bought Canadian goods. -Build Railways: The Canadian Pacific Railway was to run coast to coast, unify people, increase trade. -Encourage Immigration: Especially in Western Canada, bigger population = bigger market.

    -The first phase of industrialization came to Quebec in late 19th century. -Skilled craftsmen were using costly/time consuming methods. -They were replaced by factories, they were more efficient, but also dangerous and boring to work in. -These first manufacturing industries were powered by coal/steam engines

    The first world war helped with the economy because the men were being payed to be soldiers, army equipment were being produces and women were joining the work force while their husbands were out on the battlefield.

    The 1920s are also know as the roaring 20s because the war was over, people were happy, and they had money to spend because of their double income. This was a golden age of the economy. Many people started companies and many invested in them.

    Since so many people started companies in the 20s, lots of them were bound to fail. This is bad news for the economy because the money that people invested in these companies had now disappeared. A lot of this money were loans from the bank, and now the bank couldn't afford to give people money out of their bank account since they loaned it out to somebody who lost it.

    Although WW2 is considered tragic and a horrible time in history, it did have some pros. It helped the economy rise back up to what it was before and ended the great depression. Men were getting payed in the army, women were joining the work force permanently, and factories were producing army equipment. All great for the canadian economy.

    Urban expansion is the process of the population of a city growing and the city growing along with it. This included:
    • The concentration and construction of services (transportation, hospitals, education…), infrastructure (aqueducts, sewers).
    -Development of suburbs. -Rural exodus.

    The quiet revolution happened after the era of Maurice Duplessis. Duplessis was the premier of Quebec for many years, the downside of that is that he caused us to fall far behind the rest of the world in terms of culture. The quiet revolution is a non-violent revolution of how we caught back up to the rest of the world.

    The North american Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a free trade agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the United states of America. This means that companies from these countries can freely sell their there products in the other counties without having to pay extra taxes or duties which would normally cause the price of the product to be higher.
