ECL 416 Timeline

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This was not a specific court case for students with disabilities, however it does cover discrimination. It states that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal, therefore whether students are different races or disabled, a separate facility for education is unequal.
  • Chick-fil-A opened its first store

  • Jimmy Buffet's first album released - Down to Earth

  • Congressional Investigation

    This investigation found quite a few statistics and opened eyes to the need for equity in education. Referring to students with disabilities, the investigation found that 48% of students were receiving adequate education, 31% are receiving substandard education, and 21% are not int school at all.
  • My Dad was Born

  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act & Section 504

    This Act prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities in regard to federal funding, meaning students with disabilities should receive just as much federal funding to aid in their success. In addition, it gives a definition of what appropriate education is.
  • Education for all Handicapped Children Act of 1975

    This law defines the least restrictive environment so that students with disabilities cannot be held back from success. It also begins individualized education programs and states that all students have access to a free and appropriate public education.
  • Chicken McNuggets put on the McDonald's menu for the first time

  • Education of Handicapped Act Amendments

    These amendments specifically focus on infants and toddlers, providing free & appropriate education for students age 3-5. It only started at 5 before. Early intervention programs are started for students with disabilities ages 0-2.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This law made a big difference as it prohibited discrimination in the work force and required equal opportunity to employment. This meant accommodations should be made, transportation provided, and services if necessary.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This law brought in early intervention reading programs where help was needed. It provides school choice for students in failing schools and promoted highly qualified teachers in the school system. It increased accountability on schools to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing to provide opportunity to everyone.
  • Grey's Anatomy season one released

  • Endrew F. Decision

    This court decision was unanimous in deciding that educational programs must be appropriately ambitious and challenging for ALL students. Adequate support must be given to students with disabilities in what they need to pass classes. This also required an IEP for students which made a big difference. Since this, statistics show that more students with disabilities now move on to post-secondary education.
