  • Governor Arthur Phillip

    Governor Arthur Phillip was appointed governor of New South Wales from 1788 to 1792. Governor Arthur Phillip's first decision was to settle in Sydney Cove rather than Botany Bay. He cleared 650 hectares of land for farming and he had a equal relationship with convicts and soldiers. Governor Phillip built small buildings and had streets laid out and he achieved good relations with the Indigenous people.

  • Governor John Hunter

    John Hunters main task was to bring the military back into line. He was the man who created the first police force.
  • Governor Philliip Gidley King

    Governor King's main task was to continue John Hunter's work to bring the offices under control. He also stopped rum as a currency. He set up the first orphanage.
  • Governor William Bligh

    Governor Bligh was governor for 18 months. Bligh was arrested and taken prisonor the military because of the decesions he made. The soldiers spead a story that Bligh tried to hide from them under a bed.
  • The Start of the Rum Rebellion

    The Rum Rebellion started in 1808. The reason it started was because Bligh stopped rum as a currency. Officers and dealers didn't like this, so the rum rebellion started.
  • Governor Lachlan Macquarie

    Macquarie was governor from 1810 to 1821. He was the governor to permenatly stop the rum trade. He removed the trouble makers and eventually sent the corps back to England.
  • Governor Thomas Makdougall Brisbane

    Governor Brisbane was the last Governor of Sydney. He was governor from 1821-1825. He made choices that expanded the colony further.
  • Surveryor John Oxley

    In 1823 John Oxley discovered a new place for the colony. He named it Brisbane after the man that sent him Governor Thomas Makdougall Brisbane.
  • Moretan Bay Penal Settlement was established

    The reason the settlement was established because there were too many prisoners in Sydney, but they were chased out of the new settlement by mostictos.

    Today, Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland. It does not look like it did back then, although some buildings have been preserved.
