The King was forced into signing the it because it reduced the power he held as the King of England and allowed for the formation of a powerful parliament. The Magna Carta became the basis for English citizen's rights. The Magna Carta was important to the history of America because it is considered the founding document of English liberties and American liberties.

    The petition declared unconstitutional certain actions of the king, such as levying taxes without the consent of Parliament, housing soldiers in homes, setting up martial law. and also imprisoning citizens illegally.
  • The English Bill of Rights is drafted

    The English Bill of Rights is drafted
    The English Bill of Rights laid the path for the American Bill of Rights.The bill was passed through Parliament after the crowning of the new King. On December 16, 1689, the King and Queen gave Royal permission. The Bill of Rights was designed to control the power of the King and Queen and to make them liable of laws passed by Parliament.

  • Townshend Duties

    In 1767 the English parliament cut the British land tax, to balance the budget, Charles Townshend promised that he would tax the Americans to make up the difference. The Townshend duties, imposed direct revenue duties that, aimed not just at regulating trade but at putting money into the British treasury. These were payable at colonial ports and fell on lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea.

    On March 5, 1770 the Boston Massacre occured, it was a fight between a patriot mob and a group of British soldiers, several colonists were killed because of this fight. The Boston Massacre was a singnal even that would lead to the revolutionarty war.

Even though it lowered costof tea trade, aAmerican patriots were atill upset because they saw ot as a way of taxing them without their permission. The Tea Act would set off the revolutionary movement in Boston.

    The 1st Continental Congress was called in response to the Intolerable Acts. All 13 colonies, except fo Georgia, sent representatives sent delegates to the 1st Continental Congress, making it the first national meeting of the colonies.During this meeting two main documents were established the Declaration of Rights and the Articles of Assosiation. The 1st Continental Congress was a step toward a long term national desicion making body, it also laud a groundwork fro a participatory democracy.

    Since the British government continued to refuse to compromise its colonial policieds. This caused the Second Continental Congress to occur. The Second Continental Congress met on May 10, 1775 by this time the revolution had already begun.
