Early Childhood Education History Timeline

  • Period: Nov 10, 1483 to Feb 18, 1546

    Martin Luther

    He campaigned for schools to teach children how to read. He translated the Bible to German and became one of the first people to advocate for people to learn in their own language.

    John Locke

    He discovered the theory that children are born with a clean slate, or "tabula rasa". He also believed that children should begin learning as early as possible because their environment and experiences will define them.
  • Kindergarten is Founded

    Friedrich Froebel aka the "Father of Kindergarten" founded Kindergarten. He also believed that children learn through play so he developed "gifts", songs, and various games in which children would utilize to learn colors, shapes, size, counting, and etc.

    Cognitive Development Theory

    Jean Piaget develops the cognitive theory based on his findings that children learn in different stages based on age group. He believed that children should be educated based on the stage of development they're in.

    Psychosocial Development Theory

    Erik Erikson developed the Psychosocial Development Theory. Based on his research he discovered children's emotional and cognitive development is based on the care they receive from parents and teachers.
  • Economic Opportunity Act of 1964

    Signed by Lyndon B. Johnson, this act aimed at implementing social programs in order to promote health, education, and general welfare in order to fight poverty. This act resulted in the beginning of Head Start in 1965.
  • No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

    The purpose of this act is to emphasize accountability through testing in order to make sure children are learning at the rate they're supposed to and meeting the National Education Standards. Schools that meet the requirements or score higher receive federal funding.
  • President Obama's Early Learning Initiative

    This initiative is meant to extend federal funds to early childhood education, in order to improve and make it more accessible to low and middle class families. To help our future society, preschool aged children and younger need to have access to quality early childhood education programs and that is the ultimate goal of this initiative.
