    Martin Luther (1483-1546)
    Martin Luther really started the foundations and values of education. He wanted to establish a school so children can read, mostly centered around being able to read the bible. In his home country of Germany, he translated the bible into German so everyone would be able to read it. Even today, we still struggle to deal with people being able to read and learn in their own language.
  • Frederich Wilhem Froebel

    Frederich Wilhem Froebel
    Froebel is considered the father of Kindergarten, seeing it as a "garden of kids." He believes kids are seeds who are planted and ready to be nurtured by teachers so they can grow to mature plants. And while the teachers are there to help the children grow, they are also there to sit back and observe how the children learn, and to try and incorporate the methods into their style of teaching, such as songs and educational games.
  • National Defense Education Act

    The NDEA was formed on the heels of Sputnik being launched by the Soviets in 1957. WIth Sputniks launch, fear overtook the world and specifically the US. as everyone thought this would be the start of the spread of communism. The NDEA was very helpful as it provided federal for things such as science and and math. It was a pioneering event in terms of setting the up the foundation for modern education and also was beneficial to Americans because it allowed them to plan for the future.
  • Civil Rights Act

    During this time period, American Society was focused on equality for all in education. When Congress passed this law in 1972, and then amended it, more laws came out of this. such as Title IX which gave women freedom in the sports world and it was one of the most important amendments becuase it gave everyone equal access to education
  • Economic Opportunity Act

    This act was founded in 1964 by President Johnson, and it helped fight the war on poverty. This act really helped improve the quality of life for families who were struggling, by giving them access to public education as well. This also kicked off the Head Start Program in the United States, which gave children the chance to have an early start on their education.
  • The Elementary/Secondary Education Act

    This act was designed to provide children with an education in low income families. This was when Title I programs were established, and children were given free meals and were under the direction of state funding so these children could have all the resources they need to overcome any difficult academic challenge
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    This is the present form of individuals with the Education of All Handicapped Children Act. This allows the state and teachers to develop a free education that will be beneficial to the children, this was the only way for schools to recieve funding. This has been started again two more times, once in 1997 and again in 2004
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This is a present day form agains the Defense Education Act, it tests children based on what they've learned in a state issued test, to make sure children are keeping up with what they have learned during the year and if they are meeting the state requirements in terms of proficiency. There has been some opposition to this act because it is not a true way of seeing what each and every kid learns
