    Rebirth of Formal schools
    After the fall of Rome formal school disappeared. Formal schooling in Europe outside of church schools were rare in Europe until about the 10th century. The great bulk of the population was iliterate. The number of children attending schools was very limited for several more centuries.

    Martin Luther

    Martin Luther
    Luther was the father of education that establised schools to teach reading. He translated the Bible in their native tongue which individuals were free to work out their own salvation through the scripture. This translation marked the beginning of teaching.
  • Rise of schools

    Rise of schools
    The General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony decrees that every town of fifty families should have an elementary school and that every town of 100 families should have a Latin school. The goal is to ensure that Puritan children learn to read the Bible and receive basic information about their Calvinist religion. Many states followed this decree on building schools for towns throughout The United States.

    Birth of Kindergarten
    In 1837 Froebel set up his school in Blankenburg, Germany that would later become known as Kindergarten. He Called upon woman to come together and support the kindergarten. He described children as plants and teachers as gardeners, thus the term kindergarten was born. The teachers were called to educate children from the early years through their own experiences to become integrated and whole people.

    Education reformers like Horace Mann and Henry Barnard, working in Massachusetts and Connecticut respectively, helped create statewide common-school systems. These reformers sought to increase opportunities for all children and create common bonds among an increasingly diverse population. They also argued education could preserve social stability and prevent crime and poverty.

    Birth of Kindergarten in America
    The kindergarten was founded in America by Margarethe Meyer Schurz, wife of the famous German-American statesman Carl Schurz. Mrs. Schurz was a native of Hamburg, Germany, and as a young woman learned the principles of the kindergarten from its creator, Friedrich Froebel. In the 1850s she came to London, where her sister had founded the first kindergarten there.
  • Natonal Defense Education Act

    Natonal Defense Education Act
    In 1958 the United States Congress passed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This was due to the Soviet Union launch of Sputnik, the world's first satelite. The fear was Soviet would dominate as world power and spread communism. The NDEA provided federal funding for science, technology, engineering, math, and even foreign language education and is considered by many as the birth of federal education standards.
