Seven southern states declared sucession from the confederation of american states. This led to the a bloody battle were families fought each other on american soil. -

After the end of the civil war, new amendments became ratified. This led to the reconstruction period for america that took place 5 years after the war. This brought about the 13,14 and 15th amendments.
