    Woodrow Wilson's term

    Wilson wasted no time in his presidency with one of his first act as president being to ratify the 17th amendment allowing senators to be elected by people in their states. Also, in his second term, Wilson started prohibition with the passing of the 18th amendment. He then later tried to veto the National Prohibition Act but failed due to an override by congress.

    A.K.A. the great war or the war to end all wars, WW1 was a world-wide event that was set in motion by the assasination of archduke franz ferdinand.

    Lusitania sank
    A British ocean liner with passengers aboard was struck with a german torpedo. Many believe it was due to the potential of ammunition ,for the war, aboard.Before the ocean liner was launched Germany announced that any ships that they suspected had war materials on them would be destroyed.

    Lenin was the leader of the communist party and the first leader of the soviet union.

    Selective service act passed
    A.K.A. the draft act, which allowed the US government to recruit troops in order to join WW1. After the war ended this act was cancelled. The number of troops required to join the war far exceeded the number of troops that the US had. The lack in military participation was not ideal when preparing for war, so the draft was created to randomly select soldiers for war.

    Influenza epidemic

    While WW1 killed 16 million Influenza killed over 50 million people. The illness came in two waves, once in the spring killing only a few people and the second time in the fall. At first doctors and scientists couldn't figure out what the illness was. Many died just hours after showing signs of the sickness. 25% of the US population was affected by this and the life expectancy dropped by 12 years.

    Saying, printing, publishing, or writing anything defamatory about the US government was a legal crime.
  • Schenk vs. US

    Schenk challenged the Espionage act by urging drafted people to resist induction. As a challenger of the draft he was convicted a criminal by the US supreme court despite the first amendment granting freedom of speech. He was urging americans not to help out America so therefore it was ruled constitutional that he was convicted.
  • US rejects League of Nations membership

    The US was trying to stay out of foreign affairs. Also, the Senate didn't want to sign the treaty of versailles so they didn't want to join the League of Nations either.

    The rejection occurred because the US believed that they would lose too much autonomy to the league of nations.

    This was partly due to the great migration from 1916-1918.
