DW's Literacy Timeline

  • My First Book

    My First Book
Goodnight Moon was the first book my mother remembers reading to me when I was around the age of 1. Of course I had seen other picture books, but this is the first storybook she remembers.
  • Treasury of Poetry for Children

    Treasury of Poetry for Children
This is the edited version by Susie Gibbs, I was read the original, but I could only find this one, which was given to me years later by my Grandma, on my bookshelf. This was my favorite when I was 2 years old. I made my mom read it to me so many times, she said I had it completely memorized by 3.
  • Walking to Storytime at the library

Walking to Storytime at the library
I remember walking the few blocks to the library every Friday morning to go to Storytime! I loved storytime, and it also meant carrying all my other books back in our canvas bag to check out more books! While doing research, I found out that they closed my beloved library in 2008 to build a new one. This actually makes me really sad since it was the orginal library of our area and had been around since 1964!
  • Sesame Street and Barney

    Sesame Street and Barney
I loved watching Sesame Street and Barney when I was 3 and 4. My mom says Sesame Street really helped me learn to read and recognize letters. I still watched it when I was older and had the good ole VHS versions!
  • Alice in Bibleland

    Alice in Bibleland
I had (have) the complete set of Alice in Bibleland. I read the whole series when I was 4 years old and this also prepared me for Kindergarten. I attended Private School until high school, so it set a great foundation.
  • Reading on my own

    Reading on my own
I learned how to read before I started Kindergarten, sometime when I was 4 years old. My favorite books to read were the Berenstein Bears, especially Messy Room and In the Dark!
  • I Spy

    I Spy
I continued to go to the library with my mom, and she would let me get an I Spy book only if I read a chapter book first. My boyfriend actually owns the entire set from his childhood, so I also claim them as half mine!
  • Where's Waldo

    Where's Waldo
The older I got, the more interested in logic puzzles and puzzles in general I got. I always wanted the Where's Waldo books from the library, and was sad when I found other unthoughtful children had circled Waldo! Again I now own this Where's Waldo set that my boyfriend bought me. We are just big kids.
  • Little House on the Prairie

    Little House on the Prairie
I would stay up late into the night listening to my mom read me these books. Sometimes we would take turns reading, but since I was slower I would often let her read because I wanted to find out what was going to happen!
  • Dear America

    Dear America
I really loved the Dear America books! I wish they had more adult books like this now for me to read, I guess i could read these again but I would finish them easily. I was very interested in the past when I was 8-9
  • American Girl

    American Girl
Anything and everything American Girl. From the Meet Kirsten book to the My Body book. I never got the American Girl doll that looked like me, but I did get the magazine and it had those tear out paper dolls that you could dress!
  • Anne of Green Gables

    Anne of Green Gables
I loved Anne and her quirky ways. I related to her and couldn't put the series down.
  • The Babysitters Club

    The Babysitters Club
I almost totally forgot about these books, but they were one of my favorite series to read and I would always have to read them out of order it seemed because we would only pick up what was available at Half Price Books.
  • The California Diaries

    The California Diaries
The California Diaries, are from the writers of The Babysitters Club, and they were what I read after I outgrew them.
  • Harry Potter

    Harry Potter
I became Harry Potter crazy. I also took to drawing the covers of Harry Potter books free hand while waiting for more to be released!
  • Shel Silverstein

    Shel Silverstein
I still love Shel Silverstein. I also chose the poem "Sick" by him to memorize for school. I still actually have most of it memorized!
  • TTYL

    TTYL
I remember reading this book and really wishing I could have a cell phone! I begged and begged until my parents gave in.
  • Cut

    Cut
I started reading dark, more pop culture books to match how I was feeling inside about my parents separation.
  • Exploration

    Exploration
These were the books I read when...lets just say I was exploring my options in life. I am not ashamed of my past, it has shaped me to who I am today. I laugh at how rebelious I was.
  • The Scarlett Letter

    The Scarlett Letter
Man how I despised this book. I actually didn't even finish reading it but I did watch the movie. I think I really didn't like this book only because it was forced reading for AP english. I should really give Hester another try.
  • Cirque du Freak

    Cirque du Freak
This was a series of books my boyfriend gave me to read and I actually really liked them. It is a book series I remember because it was the first literature we could discuss together.
  • Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

    Scott Pilgrim Vs the World
Another book set my boyfriend led me too. I remember searching from barnes and noble to the next trying to complete the series. This was also the first comic book I actually liked.
  • Brave New World

    Brave New World
I remember this book blowing my mind! I loved it so much! I loved the different writing style than what I was used to and the idea of the futuristic world. I want to read this book again one day. I felt very connected to the characters.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird

    To Kill a Mockingbird
I remember this book, I didn't like it at the time because it was forced reading in high school, but now I can appreciate it. I also remember how uncomfortable classmates felt when we were reading it out loud and the teacher made us say the N word because she said it was appropriate to the time of the book. I think one girl almost cried.
  • A Million Little Pieces

    A Million Little Pieces
even though I new it was not really a true nonfiction work, I still had to eventually read the book that made Oprah so mad! I really liked that story of James Frey. It entertained, and its even more funny to me somehow that people loved it until they found out it wasn't all completely true.
  • Go the F**k to Sleep

    Go the F**k to Sleep
Seriously, this book is hilarious. I still love it, but at the age of 21 and working at a daycare during naptime, this book was comedic genius. And then I heard it read online by Samuel L. Jackson and I couldn't stop laughing. Everyone should read this (not necessarily to children) just to relieve the stress of getting kids to bed.
  • The Hunger Games

    The Hunger Games
I was hooked. I got my Kindle in the mail for a cheaper way to get textbooks on the go and found my self downloading one book after the other in the Hunger Games series instead of reading my textbooks!
  • Fifty Shades of Grey

    Fifty Shades of Grey
Okay, so I caved and read this book all the women were raving about. I feel kind of bad putting this as my last book and seeing my timeline kind of goes downhill from year to year. I hate to admit i was hooked on these books. Lets hope the next 23 years of my timeline improves!
