    During this period Durkheim stuggled with the rigors of study in Paris, France. However he became increasingly drawn to the theories of his teachers and fellow students. Durkheim was drawn to the ideals of a Republic which embodied anti-clerical reforms to education which would pave the way to a free national system, compulsory, secular education.
