At the age of 7, she was diagnosed with polio. It caused her right leg and foot to be weakened. This helped her in her future carrer, by learning to be strong.

Her parents always tried to expose creative works into her life. Later following her highschool years, she started to take intrest in photography leading into her future career

She photographed unemployed men who walked the streets of san Fransisco. It showed the how despret the men where in the conditions of the Great Depression.

She had her first big exhibition and this is important because this is when her reputation of skilled photographer was etablished

She published many of her photographs in the book called An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion. This helped her art work get out and for everyone to see. She later won an award for it.

She recorded the evacuation of Japanise Americans to detention camps after Japan's attack on pearl harbor. This showed the devistation of the event.
