He was born in 1386, in Florence, Italy.

Donatello went to the guild and learned the basics of sculpting. He was 17.

He became an apprentice for Lorenzo Ghiberti, the master bronze reliefs (sculpting from a flat surface), in 1403.

By 1407 he left Ghiberti, and gone to the workshops of the Cathedral in Florence.

Donatello was requested to make many pieces which he often did with other artists. One work is the Marzocco, the lion of the Florentines, carved in sandstone.

He traveled to Rome with Michelozzo made alot of works, including the tomb of Pope John XXIII in the Baptistery.

From 1443 to 1453 Donatello was in Padua, Italy. Where he constructed works like the Gattamelata.

When he returned to florence he created the unhealthy looking Mary Magdalen, carved out of wood, In 1456 Donatello made an equally terrible bronze work of Judith cutting off Holofernes' head.

He died on Dec. 13, 1466. He left two unfinished bronze pulpits. One was finished by his pupil Bertoldo di Giovanni
