DNA Timeline

  • P.A. Levene

    P.A. Levene
Levene discovered the basic structure that makes up DNA....nucleotides. The two nucleic acids found in living cells are DNA and RNA, DNA nucleotides include sugar deoxyribose, a phospate and some nitrogen bases. RNA nucleotides contain sugar ribose, a phosphate and some other nitrogen bases.
  • Fredrick Griffith

    Fredrick Griffith
Griffith studied two strands of DNA. Out of those, one had a sugar coat and one did not. By conducting experiments, Griffith learned the coated (smooth) strain causes pneumonia....and the rough (noncoated) does not. While testing on a mouse, the smooth cells killed the mouse, unlike the rough cells. He learned there had been a transformation from live R bacteria to live S bacteria.
  • Erwin Chargaff

    Erwin Chargaff
Chargaff noticed a pattern in adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. After testing DNA, he found that the amount of adenine was almost equal to the amount of thymine, and that the amount of guanine was almost equal to the amount of cytosine. (Chargaff’s Rule).
  • James Watson

    James Watson
Watson discovered evidence that molecules of DNA might store genetic information. In conclusion of his experiment, DNA carries genetic information in all living things.
  • Oswald Avery

    Oswald Avery
Oswald identified the strain that connected live S-cells to R-cells: DNA.
  • Hershey and Chase

    Hershey and Chase
By using a virus that attacks bacteria, Hershey and Chase proved that DNA was the transforming factor.
    1. The virus used was made of DNA and protein.
    2. Viruses can not duplicate themselves.
Therefore, using these two factors, Hershey and Chase began to determine which part was injected/made from genertic material.
  • Rosalind Franklin

    Rosalind Franklin
Franklin discovered the patterns of x-ray diffractions. Rosalind concluded that different traits (eye color...ect...) are determined by DNA.
  • Linus Pauling

    Linus Pauling
Announced he created a model of the DNA structure. Although, Watson proved that it was incorrect.
  • Francis Crick

    Francis Crick
Along with Watson, Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA. This is what we currently use to model today. They concluded the molecule was built from two sets of nucleotides, one going up and another going down
  • Maurice Wilkins

    Maurice Wilkins
Wilkins experimented on the aligned fibers inside the DNA structure. He also worked with James Watson and Francis Crick.
