link Ed contracted polio when he was 14 and since then he has been paralyzed from the neck down not including a couple fingers and toes and has been in a wheelchair almost all of his life. He was the first student accepted to UC Berkeley that had to rely on a wheelchair. The college didn’t accommodate for Ed and he had to fight to get help from the school and advocate for the rights of disabled people.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a law that protects people from discrimination based on their disability. A child has equal acess to education. It was caused by the sit-in at the San Francisco Office of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The act is still in use today. -

link The education for all handicapped children act was enacted by congress in 1975. This new law gave equal protection to kids with disabilities and allowed them to have a better education. The act required all public schools accepting federal funds to provide equal access to education and to one free meal a day for kids with physical and mental disabilities.

ACCD was a national consumer-led disability rights organization. They had a 10 city to sit in. The cause of the sit in was the government didn’t carry laws to enforce Section 504, the world’s first disability civil rights provisions. This organization made 600 living centers, and helped make public transit accessible. -

The Americans with Disabilities act is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. It was caused by the Capitol Crawl. The ADA has had great effects on the people with disablities. -

Although there are laws that have fixed problems in big cities, there is still problems in smaller towns. (little transportation, few curb cuts, few interpreters) There is also little support for the disabled. -
link Some major accomplishments are governmental and non governmental organizations, professionals, and people with disabilities are all working together to break down the barriers placed on disabled people. Another accomplishment is there is more advocacy and recognition towards handicapped people.
