  • How did netball come about?

    A year after basketball was invented in 1891, the sport was modified for women to accommodate social conventions regarding their participation in sport
  • First game of netball was played

    First game of netball was played
    The first game of netball was played at Madame Ostenburg's College in England. This was a very different game to what we now know as netball with no standard rules in place at this time.
  • Women's International Federation of Basketball and Netball established

    Representatives from England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies met and estalished the Women's International Federation of Basketball and Netball. Common rules were decided upon and a four yearly World Championship was organised.
  • Rules

    The rules of netball were standardised internationally. An international governing body was formed to oversee the sport globally, now called the International Netball Federation (INF). This made netball a more stable and fair game, this would of encouraged more people to play it
  • First Netball World Championship Tournament

    The first Netball World Championship Tournament was held in Eastbourne, England.
  • First World Youth Netball Championship

    The first World Youth Netball Championship is held in Canberra, Australia. This is a tournament for Netball players under the age of 21. The success of this event meant it was decided to be held again every four years. Australia took the title in 1988.
  • Netball becomes an "Olympic recognised" sport

    After 20 years of lobbying, Netball becomes an "Olympic-recognised" sport, allowing it to be considered for future Olympic Games. When netball got that status more people were interested in the sport
  • Netball is included in the Commonwealth Games

    Netball is included in the Commonwealth games for the first time in Kuala Lumpur. When the commonwealth games was shown on television it become more popular and encouraged people around the world to do the sport.
