The Magna Carta
This was created because the king was trying to raise taxes and the Barons decided to rebel against him. Established a committee of 25 barons who could at any time meet and overrule the will of the King if he defied the provisions of the Charter, seizing his castles and possessions if it was considered necessary -
The Petition of Right
Was created because Charles 1 asked Parliament fo rmore money in taxes. Document limited the kings power. -
The English Bill of Rights
Was created to prevent the abuse of power by william and Marry and all future monarchs, Parliament. What this document did was porhibit a standing army in peacetime, except with the sonsent of Parliament, and required that all parliamentary elections be free. -
The Albany Plan of Union
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the problems of olonial trade and the danger of attacks by the French and their Native American allies. Franklin proposed the formation of an annual congress of delegates from each of the 13 original colonies. -
The Declaration of Independence
Richard Henry Lee proposed that the United states ought to be free from the Great Britian. The declaration announces the independence of the United States. -
The Articles of Confederation
Declaration of Independence also called on the Second Continental Congress to propose "a plan of confederation". This document established "a firm league of friendship" -
The New Jersey Plan
Was created to have all the states equally represented. The New Jersey Plan retained the unicameral Congress of the Confederation, with each of the states equally represented. -
The Virginia Plan
Not state had more to do with the callin gof the convention than Virginia did. It was not suprising, then, that its delegates hould offer the first plan for the new constitution. The Virginia Plan called for a new government with three seperate branches. Legislative, executive, and judicial. -
The Constitution of the United States
Was created to give our government some basic frame work. The document lays out the basic framework and procedures of our government. -
The Connecticut Compromise
Was created to build a strong Constitution. It was agreed that Congress should be composed of two houses.
