    Hernando wanted to find a new peru. He had been searching a year before with 620 other people with him. In 1540 he had continued his march in Geogria. At the Savannah River he met an indian women who had offered him some pearls. She had also told De Soto that he could find more in the nearby burial grounds. After he was done collecting 350 pounds of pearls, the search was still on and went throughout modern day South/North Carolina, into the Smokey Mountains, and southward towards Alabama.

    De Soto reached the Mississppi River. He built Flat boats and him and his troops crossed the Mississppi. This was under the cover of the nigth sky. He was near Mephis, Tennessee when he crossed the Mississppi. To this day he is still beleived to be the first explorer to croos the Mississppi River.

    The De Soto expedition was a great failure. He failed to establish any permenant colonies, to find gold, and did not find the two passageways to the Ocean. He also left beind diseases on his exploration and brought it back.

    De Soto died on May, 21 1542. He was struck by the fever. This happen when he crossed the Mississppi River. His crew sank his body in the River that he just decovered. Before Desoto died he neamed Luis de Moscoso Alvarado the new leader of the expedition. Half of his men were killed by disease and was killed in battle angainst Indians.
