    Charles Darwin, age 22 begins his voyage on the HMS Beagle
  • Cape Verde Islands

    Darwin makes his first discovery on his voyage. Darwin was so excited about his find he said,”It then first dawned on me that i might perhaps write a book on the geology of the various countries visited, and this made me trill with delight.”
  • Crossing the equator

    As Darwin crosses the equator he talks about how he had undergone the disagreeable operation oh being shaved. The constable blindfolded Darwin and led along to a plank as buckets of water splashed around the ship.
  • Salvador, Brazil

    Here in february of the year 1832 is when Darwin explores the Brazilian rainforest for the first time. Darwin is instantly overtaken with the landscape and is very happy. “it is hard to say what set of objects are the most striking; the general luxuriance of the vegetation bears the victory, the elegance of the grasses, the novelty of the parasitical plants, the beauty of the flowers”, said Darwin

    Darwin is fascinated by the fossils he comes across saying,”I have been wonderfullly lucky with fossil bones. Some of the animals must have been of great dimensions! I am almost sure that many of them are quite new.”

    Captain Robert FitzRoy repatriates three native people he has brought on a previous voyage. FitzRoy tries to start a christian mission which failed terribly
  • Falkland Islands

    Darwin windswept Falkland Islands “desolate and wretched” he says. Darwin then comes across some primitive looking rocks and finds some fossils.

    Darwin along with the local people or “gauchos” explores the fertile lowland areas, known as Pampas.

    Here is where Darwin experiences the earthquake in the woods near Valdiva. Darwin also sees Mount Osorno erupt.
