    HMS Beagle

    Darwin received an invite to voyage as a naturalist to voyage around the world. They set sail from Plymouth on 27 December 1831 until the 2 October which they returned to England. It was a 5 year journey.

    Alfred Russell Wallace
    In 1858, Darwin received a manuscript from a fellow naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace. The manuscript regarded the same theory as Darwin.
  • On the Origin of Species

    On the Origin of Species
    This was one of Charles Darwin's most famous books. It was created to support his theory of evolution back in 1858. It not only supported the theory but also had new ideas and a specific explanation.
  • 'Darwinism'

    Thomas Henry Huxley had created the term Darwinism in April 1860. It was to describe evolutionary concepts.
  • Darwin's Bulldog

    On 2 November 1871, Thomas Henry Huxley wrote a letter to Ernest Haeckel stating: "The dogs have been snapping at [Darwin's] heels too much of late." This was shown as support to Darwin.

    During the period of the 1880s to 1920s scientist were occasionally called 'the eclipse of Darwinism'. Scientists proposed many different alternative evolution mechanisms.

    Darwinism had a huge influence on WWI with the idea of survival of the fittest. A famous German Darwinist, Ernst Haeckel argued about Christians beliefs and ethics.

    From the 1930s to 1950s the modern evolutionary synthesis was developing.

    The Holocaust

    From 30 Jan. 1933 to 8 May 1945 was the Holocaust. The event was created by the Germans and in particular Adolf Hitler. He wanted to have a 'master race' and with that vision in mind he planned to eradicate the Jews.
  • Walking Whale

    Walking Whale
    Scientist began to find evidence of the remains of Ambulocetus natans, the name which means 'swimming-walking whale'. It was to move like an otter. This supports the idea of extinction.
