    You start to see the life that Kunta lives. Juffure is a small village where Kunta was born and is being raised. They have endured deaths, hot days, cold nights, starvation, but they still get a rainy season and have the harvest festival. Kunta becomes closer to his little brother Lamin and learns how to herd goats and becomes part of the second-kafo (the age groups are kafos) pg. 1-63 Total: (325)
  • Chapter 19 Pg. 63-73

    Kunta's fa (father) tells Kunta that he can accompany his fa on a trip out of Juffure to visit his uncles' village. Kunta knows that he is the youngest to get this privilage so far. He travels into two villages on the way, and like his fa, ignores the naked children. They stop to rest at a village with many elders, and just babies, who tell of the toubob (white men) who took all of the younger people away. They leave the next day to countinue their journey. pg. 63-73 Total (335)

    After a big celebration to honor the new town, Kunta and his fa head back to Juffure. When Kunta gets there, he realizes that the second kafo boys have completed their schooling and they graduate. The next harvest festival signals the begining of their man-hood training. Kunta doesn't enjoy it much and soon a hood is over his head. pg. 73-91 Total (353)

    Kunta completes his man-hood training. He learns to hunt, skin and cook faster than he ever could before. Also he learns to navigate by the stars, speak the "language of men" and comes to love those who have trained him.     Kunta has returned from manhood training and the men seem numerous that he has no work to do. While out on duty, he meets two menwho are going to search for gold. They ask if Kunta would like to join them, but he saysthat he will catch up with them there. Kunta asks his father for permission to take Lamin with him to the village. The family agrees. They leave and come back with quills filled with gold. Also, Kunta starts to attend the "court" with the councel of elders. pg. 115-141 total (403)

    Kunta is thinking about taking a trip to Mali while he is on his guarding duty. Being distracted in the morning, he goes to chop wood for a drum and ends up being kidnapped by the toubob (white man/men). Thus begins his trip on the slaveship and all the harsh conditions. pg. 141-167 Total (429)
