Gym teacher finds alcohol
Mr. Grant Crabbe’s gym teacher found 'Silent Sam' (flask of vodka) in Crabbe's locker, Grant finds out that Crabbe has a drinking problem. Crabbe didn’t get in trouble because he's an honour student and has rich parents. Mr. Grant told Crabbe that he should get in trouble but Mr. Grant knew it would ruin Crabbe's future, so he didn’t tell on him. -

Crabbe plans his trip to run away
For a year Crabbe has planned to run away the day before his final exams in senior year. He plans his trip, and gathers all the supplies from his basement he will need when he's ready to leave. When he gathers everything from his basement he puts different items in the places he took the equipment from. How Crabbe needed clothes he took some of his old clothes that he was supposed to give to the Salvation Army, but never did. -
The night Crabbe leaves his house
Crabbe’s parents left to go out, Crabbe thought they wouldn’t be back till like 1 or 2 in the morning. It was the night before final exams. Crabbe felt like this would be a perfect time to leave. When he goes to leave and gets the canoe ready, his parents come home. Crabbe has to wait stall until they settle down to sleep, until he can actually leave his property. -
Crabbe's first day on his journey
This is the day Crabbe heads to the campsite in his station wagon, When he starts seeing signs for Ithaca camp, he starts looking for a good hiding spot for the station wagon, he comes to a 'big stand of evergreens packed fairly close together but allowing room to ram the wagon into the middle of them' . After that he headed to the closes spot of the water on Ithaca camp ground; he gets into his canoe and heads off on the -
Crabbe Gets attacked by a black bear
Crabbe’s second sleep out in the wilderness was frightening, when he awoke in his tent in the middle of the night, due to a nightmare. He seen a black shadow outside the tent, and began to freak. A black bear started coming into the tent, and searching for food. Crabbe freaked and went under the sleeping bag covers. After the bear disappeared he realized he wet himself, he got undressed then fell back asleep after. -
Crabbe vs. Waterfall
Crabbe goes onto a body of water, and he doesn’t realize the sound he was hearing was of water crashing at the bottom of the waterfall. He didn’t even know there was a waterfall. When he starts speeding up he started cluing in. when he went over he thought to himself 'Christ, Crabbe, I’ll bet you look ridiculous'. When he crashed into the water he felt darkness and cold, dark meant a dead, chilling liquid. He felt like he kept sinking. -
Crabbe meets Mary
When Crabbe went over the waterfall, this young adult named Mary dived in and got him. She fixed him up, and she fed him. He stayed with her for a day or so, he had no clue why a beautiful girl like her would be out in the wild. She was strong, tough and brave; she risked her life for Crabbe. She brought him back into the world. She was a new thing, a new change in his life. -
Mary teaches Crabbe survival skills
Mary and Crabbe went fishing when they got back to Mary's camp she taught him how to gut fish. When Crabbe went out into the wild he didn’t know many survival skills... when he was home, living with his parents, he had people do mostly everything for him. Doing hand-on things out in the wild was an incredible experience for him. He found it fun to actually gut the fish. She taught him how to make bread, brew decent tea, and build a proper fire. When Crabbe finally succeeded he felt proud. -
Mary makes Crabbe go on a Compass Quest
Mary decided she would teach Crabbe how to use a compass; she brought him to a place in the woods, and then left. She had a landmark where she was for him to find. He had to find his way back to her by using the compass. in the end everything turned out alright. Crabbe found his way back and he was happy he was back with Mary. That night he was feeling very good about himself. -
Addiction turns from one thing to another.
Crabbe has been having trouble not having 'silent Sam' around, Mary knew what was wrong with him, and gave him a pipe to help his urges for alcohol. On his pipe there was a symbol called "Yin Yang". Mary was hoping that if he didn’t inhale the smoke, he wouldn’t become as addicted as some people. The pipe was special to Mary. Also the pipe really helped Crabbe. 'The wilderness and those never ending hand-carved lines had a special effect on me' Crabbe stated at the end of chapter 13. -
Crabbes starts having self-respect for himself
There were days that Crabbe would only think of him and Mary in the woods, throughout that time. There were days that he forgot where he came from. Throughout those days he grabbed a little self-respect. He was finally in shape for the first time ever. He actually thought he could survive in a bush without Mary he was feeling great about himself, for the first time in a long time. -
weather changes fast
Crabbe woke up one morning and seen frost on the ground; it surprised him because it was the first frost of the year. The days started turning out a little shorter and the lake water was chilly almost too cold for comfortable swimming, and they had to start wearing heavier clothing. Fall came; tree leaves started changing color and falling off trees. It started becoming harder for them to canoe, because thin ice would cover the water. -
Crabbe and Mary head off to find food
The weather was getting cold, and they knew winter was coming soon. They decided to head off onto the water to try to find food for the winter, or other things that could help them survive. Mary knew a place where they could take things, so they headed on their journey. -
Crabbe tells Mary he loves her
Crabbe finally admitted that he loved Mary, Mary told him she loved him to but it was something about the way she said it, that he knew she didn’t mean the same way. He knew she meant as a friend and he was okay with that. He was happy that she was still in his life. He was also glad that telling her how he felt didn’t change anything. -
Crabbe and Mary get to their destination
Crabbe and Mary finally get to where they had to go, and searches inside long building that were hidden in the trees. When they arrived they seen there was smoke coming out of one of the chimneys and Mary realized it would complicate some things for them. They headed toward the kitchen building; it was their objective, all the food was in there. They moved out after dark and headed inside to find some grub. Mary ended up finding some food and tobacco for Crabbe. -
Mary gets caught, Crabbe be's a hero
Crabbe and Mary were still at the rec houses in the woods trying to find food when one of the hunters dog started barking. Crabbe froze and stayed still because he thought the dog would catch him. The dog started going toward the kitchen and one of the men found Mary. They brought her inside and Crabbe started freaking out. He has to be a 'hero' and save Mary! He comes up with a plan to confuse the dog, he catches the kitchen on fire to get the hunters out, and he gets Mary back! -
Mary dies
Mary and Crabbe are finally away from the hunters and they sit down to rest for the night, they make a fire just calm down to realize what just happened. Mary tells Crabbe she'll go get some things for the fire. When Crabbe gets back he is calling out to Mary, but she doesn’t respond. He looks over a ledge, and there were Mary dead, not moving, at the bottom of the hill. Crabbe had no feeling toward this.He burned her body so it wouldn’t get eaten by creatures. Then he went on his way -
Crabbe figures out the truth about Mary
All this time that Crabbe has known Mary, she never told him about why she was in the woods or anything else about her personal life. When Mary died and Crabbe went back to their camp, he went into her private canvas canoe pack. He finds out a lot about Mary; how she was married, she was a professor, and how she KILLED her husband, Crabbe realized this is the reason she ran away, so she wouldn’t get in trouble or caught. -
Strom hits
For the past few days Crabbe was mop[ing around, feeling depressed and sorry for himself. Then one morning he woke up, there was four feert of snow on the ground and big flakes were still falling he had to make a decisionn if he wants to be burried for the winter or finally go home, He decided to leave, so he packed up his things and was on his way. throughout the days of this strom Crabbe's hands froze, same with his toes. He found a cabin and took a rest because he felt weak. -
Driver to the rescue
Crabbe finally made it to the road, he started to hitch-hike, and finally someone picked him up, the man asked him if there was something wrong with Crabbe's hand, and when he looked at it he was in shock at how bad it looked. He told Crabbe he's taking him to a doctor, no denying it! They bolted it into the closes town and the man brought Crabbe into the clinic. -
Hospital #1
the nurses at the hospital gave him some needles to numb the pain. They put him on drugs and it made is head feel weird. They told him they thought he had frost bite in his lungs, and they amputated two of his fingers. He was freaking out about that. The doctor said it could've been worse cause he could of lost his hole hand. The clinic didnt have enough room for him there so they had to move Crabbe into a bigger hospital. -

After crabbe was at the new hospital for awhile. People started asking questions about him, he would onmly tell the police officer his name. The ppolice officer told him that he'd have to contact his parents. The cops brought his parents in a few days later , Crabbe was nervous about seeing his parents and didnt want to confront them, he turned around and started headed towards the double doors because he couldnt deal with this pressure. -
"family time"
When Crabbe finally went to talk to his parents it was awkward at first. His dad was already trying to tell him what to do, but Crabbe didnt want to start off ina arguement. Crabbes mom said it isnt late for him to go back to the futre they wanted for him, but he didnt want to. He told them it wasnt their fault he ran away, and that made his mother cry, and he made his dad tear up. he told his parents its all behind them now, and they agreed and went home after awhile, it didnt go that bad. -
The future
After Crabbe singed himself out of th ehospital a few days later. At first it was weird sleeping in a house because he was trapped again. Some nights he would have sadness when he thought about Mary. he started Jogging and he got a job at a sheet metal plant across town. When the weather got better he would go to Ithica camp and hike. Also one of his workers heads up to Ithica camp, and the forest around the area with younger kids and teaches them survival skills. Crabbe would tag along and help
