Twenty per cent of these first convicts were women. Many of the female convicts worked in female factories. lots of the women were doing sewing work in the factories. The Parramatta Factory was a place that many pregnant women went and also lots of orphans.

By the mis 1830s only about 6% of the convicts were locked up. The rest were working for free settlers and authorities.
