    Magna Carta

    The Magna Carta was created in 1215. The main purpose of this document was to protect the rights and property of citizens from a tyrannical king. It was put in place to keep everyone, even the king, in subject of the law. In the constitution the 14th amendment protects those same rights and does not allow a person to have too much power. This amendment makes it clear what rights you have and protects you through having the right to vote for representation.

    Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower Compact was created in 1620. The compact was used to establish a structure of self-government. The main goal was to create equality for everyone in the group who could vote and gained a certain political power in the area, under the authority of the King. The 15th amendment of the Constitution allows people to vote for their government. It also allows anyone no matter the color of your skin or gender to be able to vote for the government you want.

    Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

    Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was created in 1639. The purpose of this was to create a foundation or framework of the government they wanted. It included a preamble with 11 laws and created a separation between legislative, executive, judicial, and administrative authority. The constitution is similar all together, but the most similar is Article 1. This article creates a separation of powers, which includes the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

    The English Bill of Rights was created in 1689. These rights were put in place to protect the people by allowing the people of the country to take away power. This guaranteed that the power was in the hands of the people, not a tyrannical leader. In the Constitution, the 8th Amendment protects people from cruel and unusual punishment. This allows you to have a fair trial and lets the law determine a fair punishment.

    The Albany Plan of Union was created in 1754. This was put in place to unite the colonies into one centralized government. The plan was to create a government that all the states could follow. The Albany Plan of Union closely relates to the preamble of the constitution in the way that the preamble is uniting the states together and creating a government to follow. The beginning of the preamble is “We the People” which shows the united front of the people.

    The French and Indian War began in 1754 and ended in 1763. Also known as the seven years war, was a huge conflict between Great Britain and France. This conflict started mainly over territory and war debt. Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution allows congress to collect taxes and pay off debts. This is like the French and Indian war because that is why the parliament started taxing the people, so they could try and pay off the debt.

    The acts (intolerable, sugar, stamp, etc.)

    The Acts (intolerable, sugar, stamp, etc.) was created in 1767. These acts were put in place to try and raise money for the colonies. Whether it was taxing on sugar or tea, they taxed it to try and pull them out of bankruptcy. Article 1, section 7 of the Constitution makes it so that you cannot be overtaxed like in The Acts. This article states that any bills/taxes to raise revenue must begin in the House of Representatives and the Senate must agree.

    The First Continental Congress happened in 1774. This event came into play because the British Parliament tried to take back control over the colonies. The colonies were not having it, so they drafted a declaration of rights and grievances. This fits well with the 1st amendment of the constitution, giving the people the right to petition the government to look at your grievances. The first amendment is there to give the power to the people, not to a king.

    The Second Continental Congress happened in 1775. The goal of this meeting was to establish the functions of the government like voting for ambassadors and creating currency. The 12th amendment is related to the second continental congress because with this amendment, you have the right to vote for your representatives A.K.A the president. This allows the people to have a say in what their government is doing.

    The Declaration of Independence was created in 1776. This document was created to protect the citizens natural rights. The Declaration of Independence was one of the first documents created that closely follows the Constitution. The 5th amendment relates to the The Declaration of Independence because it protects your natural rights and does not allow anyone to take that away from you. Some of these natural rights include life, liberty, and property.

    The Articles of Confederation was created in 1777. The Articles of Confederation made the United States a confederation of sovereign states. This document made sure the states would maintain power, gave votes to the states through the congress, etc. The 10th amendment of the constitution gives the powers of the Constitution to the states or to the people. This brought the states together under one government ran by the people.

    Shays rebellion

    The Shay’s Rebellion happened in 1786. The rebellion was series of uprisings, which was caused by high taxation and economic crisis. The result of the rebellions put in place laws that helped the economic crisis and the debt. The 16th amendment touches on the rebellion by giving congress the right to give and collect taxes on incomes. This allows the country to not fall into an economic crisis or debt.

    This Plan used a strong government with three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. It called for a legislature divided into two bodies the Senate, the House of Representatives. This gave a more proportional representation. Article 1 of the Constitution created the legislative branch that splits into two, the senate and the house of representatives.

    New Jersey Plan

    The New Jersey Plan was created in June 1787. Thus, document replaced the government that was created in the Articles of Confederation. The goal of this document was to give congress the power to tax, making sure each state has an equal amount of vote, and gave the power to tax and regulate commerce. Article 4 of the constitution relates to the New jersey plan in a way that states are treated equally and should respect the other states.
  • Three-fifths compromise

    Three-fifths compromise

    This was implemented in to figure out representation and taxation. The compromise stated that only 3/5th of the slave population could be counted towards taxation and representative purposes. Article 1, section 2 of the constitution relates to the 3/5th compromise because in this article they must divide the congressional districts among the states. They do this to equal out the representation throughout the states, just like how they were trying to do with the compromise.
