    Magna Carta

    King John of England was dealing with a lot of rebellion from his people. This document brought an end to the absolute power of English sovereigns as they were required to be held accountable by the law. King John signed this document in England. It was also called The Great Charter, and the King had to respect feudal rights and privaleges, uphold the freedom of the church, and maintain the nation's law.

  • Mayflower Compact

    This was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony. It was signed by the people fleeing from King James of Great Britain aboard the Mayflower. There were 41 men of the 101 passengers that signed it. The purpose of this was to prevent any disagreements among the colonists for the sake of survival.

  • Petition of Rights

    This basically sets limits on the power and authority that the king has. This sets restrictions on non-Parliament taxation, no martial law, and no imprisonments without cause. King Charles I signed this petition.
  • English Bill of Rights

    The English Bill of Rights limits the powers of the rulers of England. It sets out the rules for freedom of speech in Parliament, the requirement for regular elections to Parliament, and the right ot petition the monarch. King William and Queen Mary of England signed this. It also reestablished the liberty of Protestants to ahve arms for their defense within the rule of law.
  • Albany Plan of Union

    This was a proposal to try and creat a unified government for the American colonies. Benjamin Franklin suggested this plan, but the plan was rejected and never created. Join or Die was created to show this and it was created by Benjamin Franklin.
  • French and Indian War

    This war was fought between France and Britain and was also known as the 7 Years War. British territory was being occupied by France which led to conflict. The French easily gained the support of the Indians. But, England was victories and received Canada and Florida. Some of the major battles were Fort Duquense and Battle of Quebec. Ultimately, Britain was the winner of this conflict. Britain's victory led them to have a stronger power over the colonies.

  • King George III Takes Power

    King George gained power over England during the Revolutionary War. He made life for the colonists a lot harder by adding a lot of taxes which led to revolts.

  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp act of 1765 was signed by the british government. The Act was signed in Great Britton. The act imposed a tax on all paper documents in the colonies. Parlameint repealed the Stamp act in 1766. Then they issued a Declarity actto reaffirm its authority to pass any colonial legislation it saw fit. The act came as a time when when the Brittish empire was deep in debt from the Seven Years War.

  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Many British soldiers were harassed by a crowd of protestors, so the soldiers opened fire onto the civilians around them. There were five colonists killed. The Townshed Acts led to the Boston Massacre because the British was raising revenue in the colonies to pay the salaries of governors and judges so that they would be independent of colonial rule, and eventually the citizens resisted.

    Citizens in Boston, Massachusetts were upset about the taxes set on tea. A group of people wanted to protest this tax by dumping chests of tea into the Boston harbor. The Sons of Liberty organized this event and ended up dumping about 342 chests of tea. As a result of this, Parliament ended local-self government and became more strict on their ruling over the colonies
  • Intolerable Acts

    Britain wanted to restore order in Boston, Massachusetts after the Boston Tea Party, so they passed four acts. These acts punished the people of Massachusetts for their acts of the Boston Tea Party. Britain closed all the ports, restricted town meetings, allowed themselves to house troops wherever, and allowed to stand trial in Britain.

  • First Continental Congress

    This was held in response to the passage of the Coercive Acts by the British Parlaiment. 56 representatives attened the conference, among those were Patrick Henry, John Adams, George Washington, and John Jay. They wanted to establish a new independent government. It was held in Philadelphia.

    This battle kicked off the revolutionary war. Paul Revere ran through Concord warning the citizens that the Brittish are coming. The result of these conflicts was the Revolutionary War. The Generals of the war were General Gage from Brittian and Samuel Adams and John Hancock from the colonies.

  • Second Continental Congress

    This was also held in Philadelphia like the first congress. John Hancock was elected president. The Declaration of Independence was created here in order to gain independence for Britain. They also managed the war effort with Britain. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Hancock were all involved in this.

    It was the movement of independance from Great Britain. Mid June, 1766 a five man committe was in charge of drafting formal statements of the colonies intentions of their freedom from Britain. This was also known as the birth of American independance. Most of this document was written by Thomas Jefferson.

  • Articles of Confederation

    This was the first initial constitution of the 13 original states. It was eventually replaced by the U.S. Constitution. The first president under this was John Hanson.

    This document finally ended the war between the British and the colonies. It also recognized American independence from Britain. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, adn John Jay represented the United States. The new boundaries were from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi, and from Canada to Florida. The british finally recognized the Declaration of Independence.
  • Start of Constitutional Convention

    George Washington was elected president of this convention. Every state attended this meeting in Philadelphia except for Rhode Island. At the Annapolis Convention, states met to discuss their unhappiness with the Articles of Confederation. The original purpose of this was to discuss the Articles of Confederation and it's main problems.
