  • Period: 580 BCE to 530 BCE

    Cyrus the Great

    He became the first emperor of Persia, uniting the tribal Medes and Persians. He conquered all of Mesopotamia, Syria, and Judea. Cyrus saw himself as a liberator of people and not a conqueror.

    Hannibal

    Hannibal led his army through Spain, the Alps and into Italy to conquer Rome. He stayed in Italy for several years constantly battling Rome. However, the Romans had more manpower and eventually wore down Hannibal's army. Fifteen years after arriving in Italy, Hannibal retreated back to Carthage in 203 BCE

    August Caesar

    After Julius Caesar was assassinated, he was named Consul and formed a triumvirate with Mark Anthony and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. Augustus was not a battle king. However, under his rule, the Roman empire expanded into Hungary, Croatia and Egypt as well as securing Spain and Gaul.

    Atilla the Hun

    He was also the leader of a tribal empire consisting of Huns, Ostrogoths, and Alans among others, in Central and Eastern Europe. He invaded the Balkans, Italy and France.

    Charlemagne

    He lived from April 2, 742 until January 28, 814. He conquered much of the Saxon territories expanding into what is today's Germany, so he is considered the father of the Germany Monarchy. He also conquered the Lombards in Northern Italy, took control of Rome and conquered Bavaria.

    William "the Conqueror"

    William was born in 1028 in Falaise, which was part of the Duchy of Normandy. His father was the powerful Robert I, Duke of Normandy. When he was seven years old, his father went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. When Robert died, William was made Duke of Normandy. In 1050 William married Matilda of Flanders in a political marriage.

    Genghis Khan

    By 1215, he had captured Beijing and the Mongols ruled over the northern part of china. Genghis died in 1227. No one is sure how he died, but many people think he was injured in a fall from his horse.

    Ferdinand Magellan

    In 1519, Magellan set out to find another route to Eastern Asia. Some of the sailors decided to mutiny but he fought back and killed them. He and around 40 of his men were killed in a battle in the Philippines in 1521.

    James Cook

    During his first trip, he visited Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. The Maori warriors in New Zealand wore tattoos on their faces. Some of the sailors got tattoos on their arms and started a tradition that continues today.

    Napoleon Bonaparte

    He had four brothers and three sisters including an older brother named Joseph. He went to a military academy in France and trained to become an officer in the army.He was an ambitious man and a brilliant general who became a dictator in France and conquered much of Europe.
