Conflicts leading up to the Civil War

  • Revolutionary War

    The Revolutionary War started in 1775 and ended in 1783. It was a war where American Colonist where fighting for their independence for the British Empire. After the Battle of Saratoga, the Americans where able to ally with France in 1778 followed by Spain in 1779. After the Battle of Yorktown, the fighting slowed down to a stop in North America and in 1783 the Treaty of Paris ended the war and the American colonist won their independence.

  • Whskey Rebellion

    The Whiskey Rebellion stared in 1791 and ended in 1794. It was started by farmers who resisted the Whiskey Tax. There was little violence and it was disbanded in 1794 when Washington with around 13,000 militiamen went to stop the Rebellion, but by the time the army arrived, the rebels already went home.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was from 1812 to 1815 and was started when America declared war against Great Britain. The United States invaded Canada and took York known today as Toronto. In responce the British captured Washington and burned it to the ground. Near the end of the war, it became of stalemate and the Treaty of Ghent ended the war with no gains on either side.
  • Seminole Wars

    The Seminole Wars was a series of 3 wars. The first one starting in 1816 and the third one ending in 1858. The first Seminole War Andrew Jackson invaded Florida and managed to get Spain to cede Florida. The second Seminole War was the United States trying to force the Seminoles out of Florida and onto reservations. The third Seminole War Chief Billy Bowlegs led a raid on a U.S. fort in responce to white settlers invading their lands. By the end most Seminoles agreed to be moved.
  • Black Hawk War

    The Black Hawk War was a short war in 1832 between the United States and Native Americans lead by Black Hawk. They crossed the Mississippi River hoping to be able to resettle on their lands. A frontier militia was formed and attacked the Native Americans. Their where a couple more fight and ending with the Battle of Bad Axe. Those who survived the battle where captured and the leaders where imprisoned.
  • American-Mexican War

    The American-Mexican War started in 1846 and ended in 1848. It started when the U.S. annexed Texas. The United States invaded and occupied northern Mexico while the navy blockade important ports. The war ended when the United States army captured Mexico City and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed.
  • Bombardment of Greytown

    The bombardment of Greytown happened in 1854. The USS Cyane bombard the town of Greytown. The bombardment was a response for the government of Greytown attempts to tax using it as a port. The town was occupied and set on fire by U.S. Marines, but in the end their was no diplomatic or military reaction from any country.
  • Puget Sound War

    The Puget Sound War was a conflict between the U.S. and Native Americans who lived in the area of Washington. The war was over land rights and consisted over small skirmishes with few deaths. It ended in a U.S. victory
  • Yakima War

    The Yakima War was a conflict between the U.S. and the Yakama. It stared in 1855 and ended in 1858 and took place in Washington territory. The war ended with a U.S. victory
  • Utah War

    The Utah War was between U.S. armed forces and Mormon settlers. It started in 1857 and ended in 1858 and consisted with small battles with few deaths.
