Navigation Acts
Purpose: Colonial merchants couldnt use foregin ships to sell their goods. Also prevented merchants from selling outside of Englands empire. Outcome: Merchants resented the acts because they wanted to sell their products at higher prices. They began to ignore the laws and smuggle after this. -
Proclomation of 1763
Purpose:To keep colonists from moving further west they set the Appalachian Mountains as the temporary boundary. Outcome:It angered the colonists because some had already purchased land and were not able to move to it. -
Stamp Act
Purpose: Place tax on all printed items. Documents must contain a revenue stamp to be legal. Outcome: Upset colonists because it taxed colonies directly and it taxed colonists without their consent. -
Sugar Act
Purpose: Revised taxes on Molasses to stop smuggling and get colonists to pay taxes. Also widened jurdistiction of some courts. Outcome: Colonists protest because they belived this violated there rights as english citizens, -
Declaratory Act
Purpose: So the British could outlaw the colonists making their own laws. Outcome:It made the colonists think Parliament would pass more unfair taxes and laws. -
Tea Act
Purpose: East India Tea Company granted sole right to sell tea directly to Americans. Outcome:The Merchants boycotted because this basically put them out of the tea business. -
Coercive Acts
Purpose: Closes Boston Harbor and eliminates current government of Massachusetts Outcome: The colonist became worried they would lose control of the colonies. -
Quebec Acts
Purpose: Changed the system of government for Canada and disbanded representative assembly and right to jury by trial. Outcome: Suggested to colonists that their own assemblies would soon be disbanded and rights revoked. -
Townshend Act
Purpose: To put taxes on glass tea and paper. Outcome:The colonists decided to protest these new taxes. They tried to use products that came only from the colonies.
