It stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is a number of countries that banded together to provide collective protection against the USSR. If one of the countries goes to war specifically against the USSR then all of the countries in NATO will join the war as an ally. This was made of democratic nations who feared the USSR and weren't big enough to face them alone but together they could come together and have protection against the USSR and communism.

The USSR wanted all of Berlin for themselves so they closed all access to Berlin from the west including highways canals, and railroads. The thought was this would prevent supplies from getting to Berlin driving out the U.S. but we started delivering supplies by airplane. It was code-named VITTLES.

This was a war with North Korea, China, And the USSR against South Korea, United Nations, and the US. The North was communist and the south was democratic which we have seen before and was most likely the cause of the war. The U.S. thought the USSR had told North Korea to invade South Korea as a part of their plan to spread communism all over the world. The U.S. did not want to see communism spread as part of their containment plan so they helped South Korea go to war against the communists.

It was a war in Vietnam where North Vietnam USSR, the Vietcong as well as other countries fought against South Vietnam USA, and others. It was fought because North Vietnam which was allies with USSR was communist and was against South Vietnam which was democratic. It was a civil war where each side had allies with the two most powerful countries at the time fought because of this difference in ideology.

Sputnik was the first satellite put in space by humans and was launched by the USSR. This was the main cause of the space race to see which country could get a man in space first. It orbited for three weeks when it ran out of batteries and then continued orbit for 2 months before stopping.

The communist government in East Germany that was the USSR started making a barbed wire fence and eventually a concrete wall between East and West Berlin. East Berlin was occupied by communism and the USSR while West Berlin was occupied by democracy and the U.S. It encircled and separated west berlin so nobody from the east could get in and escape the communist government and trapping the democracy in to prevent it from spreading to the rest of Eastern Germany.

The USSR put missiles in Cuba in order to be close enough to attack us. This is the closest time the cold war was to becoming an all-out nuclear war. The U.S. said that no more missiles would be allowed into Cuba and all missiles there already would need to be destroyed and sent back to the USSR.

America successfully put two men on the moon marking the end of the space race against the soviet union. This finally proved or they thought it proved that the US was more technologically advanced than the USSR. The two astronauts that landed were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

A watershed moment in the cold war marked the falling of the iron curtain. This started the decline of all communist countries left in Europe. It occurred because of anti-government protests and democratizing parts of Eastern and Central Europe.
