    Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift occurred when the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ access to West Berlin’s land routes. The United States then began a massive airlift of food, water, and medicine to West Berlin to counter the blockade. West Berlin was supplied by the U.S. for a year and over two million people were sustained.

  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO

    NATO, also known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was created by the U.S, Canada, and several Western European nations. It was created to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. It provides political and military security.
  • Korean War

    Korean War

    The Korean War was a war that was fought between North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union, whilst South Korea was supported by the United States. The war occurred whenever North Korea invaded South Korea, and it was a very harsh war with little resolution.

  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    Creation of Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between the Soviet Union and several other eastern European countries. This pact would provide military defense for any countries in the pact. This military alliance was formed as a counterbalance to NATO.

    The Vietnam War was a 20 year war that occurred between communist North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam. The North was supported by other communist countries, meanwhile the South was being supported by the United States. It was a very long and costly war that was intensified by the Cold War, and in the end North Vietnam had won the war.

  • Sputnik

    Sputnik

    Sputnik is the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. It was launched by the USSR, and it intensified Cold War tensions between the USSR and the U.S. It also made the US fear that they had fallen behind in making new technology and made them step up their game.
  • Construction of Berlin Wall

    Construction of Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall was constructed to divide Berlin into East and West Berlin. It was built by the communist government of East Berlin to prevent people from fleeing East Berlin. The wall separated the democrats and the communists.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred when the Soviet Union installed nuclear missiles in Cuba. They planned to launch attacks on the U.S. with these missiles. The U.S. refused this and put Cuba on naval quarantine. It took thirteen days until the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles.

    Moon Landing

    The first moon landing occurred when the spacecraft Apollo 11 got astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon on July 20th of 1969. This happened eight years after John F. Kennedy announced a goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 1960’s, which was known as the “Space Race”. This was a race between the United States and the Soviet Union, which was won by the United States.

    Destruction of Berlin Wall

    The fall of the Berlin Wall occurred when the Berlin Wall was torn down. The wall was torn down because the wall separated Eastern and Western Germans apart, and many disliked that and wanted to be able to move freely. On November 9th in 1989, Eastern German leaders loosened up on the border laws making travel easier, thus uniting Germany again into whole.
