  • Creation of Nato

    Creation of Nato

    This was created by the U.S., Canada, and several other Western European Nations. The main goal was to provide protection against the USSR. This was the first peacetime military alliance the U.S. had entered outside of the Western Hemisphere.

    Berlin Airlift

    This was a military operation that supplied West Berlin with food and other vital goods. This was by airlift. Directly after the USSR blockaded the city.

    Korean War

    The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea and South Korea. At least 2.5 million people lost their lives during this war. In June of 1950, the North invaded the South. The North was Supplied and advised by the USSR to do so. The war was fought over communism and democracy.

    Creation of Warsaw Pact

    This was a political and military alliance. It was a mutual defense organization that put the Soviet Union in command of the armed forces of the member states. It included the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.

    The Vietnam War was a long costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its ally, the United States. It was intensified by the Cold War. The war was fought because the U.S wanted to completely get rid of Communism.

    Sputnik

    The Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first artificial satellite successfully placed in orbit around the Earth. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam in Kazakhstan. Which then was part of the former Soviet Union.

    Construction of the Berlin Wall

    This wall divided one side of the city from the other. This was built by the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War to prevent its population from escaping Soviet-controlled East Berlin to West Berlin. The 2 sides were physically and ideologically contrasted.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was when the USSR began to secretly install missiles in Cuba. This was to attack U.S. Cities. There were 13 days of secret negotiations when the USSR finally agreed to remove the missiles.

    This was when Neil Armstrong and “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans to touch the moon. This mission was Apollo 11. This happened 8 years after John F. Kennedy started a mission of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 60s.
  • Destruction of Berlin Wall

    This marked the fall of the “Iron Curtain”. This also paved the way for German Reunification. It was 5 days after 0.5 million people gathered in East Berlin for a mass protest. This is when the wall crumbled.
