    In 1967, Talley graduated with honors from Southern Connecticut University. Throughout his four year college career, he played for his University's football team as defensive back.
  • Career Begins

    Career Begins
    After graduating from University, Talley began his career as an assistant coach at Simsbury High School in Connecticut. He remained as assistant coach for two years.
  • College Coaching Begins

    College Coaching Begins
    After two years coaching high school, Talley became the defensive secondary coach at Middlebury College in Vermont. This year, Talley also earned a Masters Degree in Education.
  • Brown University

    Brown University
    From 1970-1976, Talley acted as offensive back-field coach at Brown University. Talley was on the staff while Brown University compiled a 36-15-2 overall record in six seasons, including Ivy League title.
  • St. Lawrence University

    St. Lawrence University
    Next, Talley was named head coach for St. Lawrence University's football team. He stayed in New York as head coach for 8 years
  • Division III Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy

    Division III Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy
    As head coach at St. Lawrence University, Talley led his team to win the Division III Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. That year, Talley was named the American Football Coaches Association/Kodak Division III Region I Coach of the Year. He was also named the Metropolitan New York Sportswriters/ECAC Coach of the Year.

    Welcome to Villanova
    When Talley arrived as the school’s 29th head coach, there wasn’t a football team. The football program had been dropped following a campaign in 1980. In 1984, Talley began the job of rebuilding the program.

    Interest in Bone Marrow Transplantation Begins
    After learning about Blood diseases and cancers that can be cured by bone marrow transplants, Talley becomes interested in adding members to the Be The Match registry. Talley then started encouraging those he knew to join the registry.

    Talley was inducted into the Haverford Hall of Fame in 1996
  • Undefeated Season

    Undefeated Season
    • During the 1997, Talley led his team to a Number 1 national ranking. This was the first time in school history that a Villanova football team was ranked Number 1 in the pools. On their way to being named ECAC Team of the Year, Talley and the Wildcats set 41 school records. They went on to win the 1997 Atlantic 10 Championship with a perfect 8-0. This year the school also won the NCAA I-AA playoffs against Colgate.

    Talley won virtually every coaching award possible.
    o Eddie Robinson Award as the nation’s top coach in all of I-AA
    o AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year Award
    o Selected to serve as assistant coach at the 1998 Hula Bowl.
    o First ever recipient of the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year Award

    • The year 2000, Talley gained two more impressive awards.

    2008 Football Season
    Talley led the Wildcats to a 10-3 overall record and a 7-1 CAA Mark. Vilanova earned a playoff appearance as well. For these efforts, Talley was named the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, the Field Turf/Howie Long FCS National Coach of the Year and the Maxwell Club Coach of the Year.

    Get In The Game Begins
    Talley partners with Be The Match to start the “Get in the Game and Save a Life” national bone marrow registration campaign. Talley enlisted 30 college football programs from all levels to take part. Since 2008, this group has add nearly 40,000 potential donors.

    The Philadelphia Sports Congress gave Talley its 2008 Community Service Award. This award is presented to a business, organization, or individual that has done the most to contribute to the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports.

    2009 Football Season
    Talley’s team won the 2009 CAA Championship and were awarded the Lambert Meadowlands Trophy, the ECAC Team of the Year, and the Wanamaker Award (which is given to the team or athlete that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia.

    • The Strauss Foundation awarded Talley the Volunteer of the Year Award. This foundation recognizes an individual for instilling compassion in collegiate student-athletes.
    • The NMDP awarded Talley the Collegiate Award to honor his outstanding commitment to raising awareness, recruiting donors, and supporting the life-saving work of the NMDP.

    Talley became just the 55th coach in the NCAA history to reach the 200 win plateau.

    2013 Football Season
    Talley led the Wildcats to the NCAA playoffs for the 10th time in program history. Villanova also claimed a share of the CAA championship. This was the sixth conference championship for Villanova under Talley’s direction. For his efforts, Talley was named the CAA Coach of the year for the third time in his career.
