Clara was born in North Oxford, MA. She was born on Christmas Day. Clara was the fifth child. Her parents were Sarah and father Captain Stephen Barton. Her mother raised the children. Clara's father was a soldier, farmer and raised horses.

She was 11 years old, when her brother David was helping to build a new family barn. He was building the roof when the board he was standing on broke. David was seriously injured. Clara and David became very close after the accident. She was great at taking care of him. Clara applied leeches to help him heal. This was one reason that nursing came about in her life.

The school Clara Barton founded was one of the first public schools in New Jersey. The populations of students grow more than 600 students over time.

Clara liked working at the patent office. She was promoted because of her intelligience. She eventually earned as much as a man would. Clara was also good at keeping secrets.

Some of the southern states wanted to secede from the United States. They wanted to ensure that slavery continue. Forming the Confederate States of America was their approach. Clara Barton did not feel that it would be permanent. She was bothered by the support of the south in Washington, D.C.

Clara supported the U.S. staying together. Lincoln said in his inaugural address that he would not end slavery. Clara hoped that this would avoid a war with the south.

Soldiers were attacked. Some were killed and others lost their possessions. She gathered clothing for the soldiers who lost their luggage. She even cooked for the soldiers.

For over two years, Clara Barton brought medical supplies to army hospitals. She also cared for the wounded and dying soldiers on the battlefield.

Clara was the first nurse to go into the field with the soldiers. Before that time, the nurses were usually found in hospitals. Although there was some pain killers, there was no understanding of germs. Doctors did not clean their instruments between patients.

Barton finds and identifies more than 22,000 soldiers killed during the Civil War. Her work included setting up the Andersonville National Cemetery in Georgia.

Barton goes to Europe to rest and visits Geneva,Switzerland. She finds out about the Red Cross. Clara goes on different adventures with them and brings the idea back to the United States of America.

She died in Glen Echo,Maryland. She was buried near her family in Oxford, Massachusetts. Clara Barton was not ever married. A book said that she "had many marriage proposals from men,but she chose never to marry."
