On March 3rd President Lincoln held his first inaugural address.

On April 12th of 1861 the first shots of the Civil war were shot at Fort Sumter.

On July 21st the Union and the Confederates engaged in a battle which was named bull run. Over 67,000 soldiers on both sides fell during this battle.

The Union came up with battle strategy that they called the anaconda plan due to the fact that it cuts off the enemies supplies, much like how the snake suffocates their prey.

Both parties came up with a ship on both sides called the "Monitor" and the "Merrimac". This battle lasted particularly long due to both ships having iron armour.
