    Fugitive Slave Act
    The North felt like the Fugitive Slave Act was mainly aimed towards them. It made them feel like they were a part of the slave system too. The Fugitive Slave Act also affected the South because this allowed the plantation owners to get their runaway slaves back.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    At the beginning, the South felt like Uncle Tom's Cabin was a positive thing because they thought that they were being supportive of slavery by taking their ideas and then puttting it into a story. However, they soon realized that Harriet was really writing against the beliefs of slavery and began to dislike the book. The North greatly supported Uncle Tom's Cabin for going against slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The North was opposed to the Kansas- Nebraska Act, because it opened up territory of theirs to be of popular sovereignty. This allowed people to vote for whether or not slavery should be allowed but Northerners wanted to abolish slavery. However, the South voted unaminously for popular sovereignty.

    Shortly after the Election of 1860, the Southerners seceded. They were unhappy that Lincoln became president, because they knew that he was against slavery, however the South was primary to slavery. On the other hand, the North was happy that Lincoln became their president, because they knew that he mostly supported the Northerners.

    The Battle of Fort Sumter shocked the North. They were attacked by the South and they were starting to lose their hope of preserving the Union. The South were becoming more agressive and becoming stronger.

    This battle was a success for the South. The South became victors of the first major battle of the Civil War. However this was not a good battle for the North, because it shattered their hopes of winning the war quickly. This battle persuaded Lincoln that he was going to need a better trained army.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This battle supported the North very effectively. This was a major win for the Union that was going to help prevent the South from moving any further. However,The Battle of Antietam did not lead to good results for the South. This battle prevented Lee and his troops from continuing his advance towards the North.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation was a positive thing for the South, because it freed slaves in the Confederate states. This allowed these slaves to be free forever and possibly become citizens. The North did not like the Emancipation Proclamation, because it allowed slaves to be free, they were worried that they would try to take their jobs, and they would be willing to work for less money.

    The Battle of Gettysburg was a major battle of the Civil War. The tides began to finally turn against the Confederates. The South attempted to raid the North after running into the North's General. They used their largest forces to try to push the North's troops back, however the North still had the advantage in this battle. They had the better position, because they were able to get the higher ground.
  • The Wade-Davis Bill

    The Wade-Davis Bill
    The Wade-Davis Bill positively affected the North yet negatively affected the South, This bill helped the North, because this made it harder for a southerner to become a citizen and the North opposed them becoming free. Also, one of the requirements to become a citizen said you had to ban slavery which supported the North's idea of abolition. The South didn't like this, because it prevented them from becoming a citizen quicker.
  • The Ten Percent Plan

    The Ten Percent Plan
    The Ten Percent Plan was Lincoln's plan of reuniting the nation as quickly as possible. This was helpful to the South, because as long as they agreed slavery was illegal, and took an oath of loyalty, they would be freed. Only ten percent of the voters needed to take the pledges in a state to form a new government. The northerners did not like this plan, because they did not want the slaves to become free quickly.
  • Appomattox Courthouse

    Appomattox Courthouse
    Appomattox Courthouse was where the Confederate and Union leaders met to end the Civil War. Lee surrendered to Grant and was assured by Grant that he would take care of the soldiers. The North was happy that they had won the battle, but the South was very sad and depressed to think that they had been through all that fighting, just so they could lose.
