  • Fort Sumter

    The Confederates easily won this battle.
    This was the first battle of the war. It encouraged a lot of Northerners to join the Union army. After the battle Lincoln asked for 75,000 troops. By 1862, more than 700,000 men had signed up to fight.
  • Bull Run/ Manassas

    It was difficult, but the Confedeeracy won this battle.
    It was located at Western Virginia.
    After that battle, it made clear that victory over the Confederacy would neither be quick or easy
  • Shiloh

    The Union won that difficult battle at Southwestern Tennessee.
    So far this was the bloodiest battle of the war.
    Also marked the end of Southern control of the Mississipi valley.
  • Shenadoah

    The Confederacy easily won this battle at the Shenadoah valley.
    It kept the pressure off the Confederate capital, Richmond.
  • Antietam

    The Union won this difficult battle at Antietam creek.
    But they wasted an opportunity to destroy the Confederate forces once and for all.
  • Fort Donelson

    This battle is located along the Clumberland River in Tennesse.
    After the difficult battle, the Union won.
    Also the Union captured the first Confederate capital of Nashville.
  • U.S.S. Monitor vs C.S.S Virginia

    The battle was difficult, but neither th Union or Confederacy won this battle.
    It was located off the coast of Virginia.
    That battle marked the end of wooden naval vessels.
  • Gettysburg

    There was a difficult battle at Gettysburg and the Union won.
    It caused the South to lose confidence.
    Turning point of the war.
  • Vicksburg

    The battle at Vicksburg was difficult.
    The Unin won though.
    That demostrated the North's ability to fight without access to supplies.
    The Missisipi river is now in the Union's hands.
