The Election of 1860 was when Abraham Lincoln became president. It was significant because South Carolina threatened to leave if he was elected. After the Election they made good on their promise and left starting the Civil War. -
The argument South Carolina had was that they voluntary joined the U.S they could voluntarily leave it as well. The Southern States that seceded called the themselves the "Confederate States of America." The person placed as President was named Jefferson Davis. -
Abraham Lincoln had informed South Carolina he was going to supply Fort Sumter. The Confederates attacked before The Union could arrive. The Attack on Fort Sumter started the Civil War. -
The Battle of Bull Run/Manasses was the first official battle of Civil War. The Union wanted to take the South's capital to weaken them but it failed. Before this battle people thought the Civil War wouldn't last long but with the victory of the Confederates that changed their minds. -
The Battle of Antietam was the first victory for the Union. This battle is considered the bloodiest day in all of American history. This victory helped Abraham Lincoln issue the Emaciation Proclamation. -
Before the Battle of Fredericksburg General McLellan was replaced by General Ambrose Burnside. The Confederacy was victorious for this battle. As for an effect on the Union is was a devastating and embarrassing loss. -

The Emancipation Proclamation only released the slaves in the Southern States not the border states. An effect was the African-Americans were allowed to fight in the Union Army. -
Important background of this battle was that General Ulysses S. Grant was already winning lots of battles in the West, he was with the Union. The battle of Vicksburg was very important because it was last step to being able to take control of the Mississippi River which was apart of the Anaconda Plan. The Union ended up being victorious in this battle which made the Anaconda Plan finally fulfilled. -
The Battle of Gettysburg was completely unplanned, General Lee wanted to invade the North to get shoes for his army. The Union ended up having the high ground and a larger amount of people which helped them win against the Confederates. This battle was seen as a turning point because General Lee, the General for the Confederacy, lost 1/3 of his army. -
The 54th Massachusetts was an all black regiment. It was the first all African-American regiment to lead a battle. The effect of this battle, was that it proved to all that African-Americans were of true value in the war. -
The Gettysburg Address was a 2 minute speech given by Abraham Lincoln. The purpose of the speech was to honor the fallen soldiers and give hope to the remaining Union soldiers. It was also used as a method of inspiration for people to join and fight in the Union army. -
Another name was for this event was Sherman's total war. Troops tore up rail lines using a method called "Sherman Bowties", destroyed crops, and burned looted towns. A path of destruction was cut 60 miles wide and 300 miles long. -
Abraham Lincoln was pushing to get slavery abolished everywhere. The 13th Amendment was passed after Abraham Lincoln's assassination. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, got rid of the Fugitive Slave Act and 3/5 compromise, and prohibited involuntary servitude. -
The surrender of the Confederates happened in a small town in Virginia. The goal of General Grant was to stop fighting and return home in peace. Grant ended up offering no jail time, weapons and horses were allowed to be kept to the Confederates.
