    The Underground Railroad lasted from 1850-1860 it formed in the 1700 it ran into the North to the free states and Canada and it reached it's height.

    The first state to secede was Alabama followed by Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas. Later, closer to Lincoln's election, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia seceded.

    Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on January 29th 1850 that had a crisis between North and South with this event as the fugitive Slave Act was amended the slave trade in Washington DC.

    The morning of April 6th, 1862 started out for the confederates with a surprise attack on the Union at the Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. Although the Confederates got the drop on the union troops, the union very quickly established a battle line on a sunken road. Multiple attacks against this battle line is how the Union won the battle driving the Confederate forces out of the camp ending on April 7, 1862. The causalities for the Confederates were 10,669 and the union had 13,047.

The three attacks spread from Miller's Cornfield all the way to Antietam Creek in Maryland. The battle ended in a draw, both sides to bloodied to advanced, and with the withdrawal of Confederate forces.     Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22nd, 1862. It stipulated that if the Southern states did not cease their rebellion by January 1st, 1863, then Proclamation would go into effect.

    Both Union and Confederate forces converged into Pennsylvania to stop the other from taking the land. With the Confederates on the offense seeking out peace in Virginia to supply Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. Both army's collided at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The union was victorious but suffered heavy casualties. Four month's later Lincoln would deliver the Gettysburg Address at the Soldiers' National Cemetery at the site of the battle, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battled ended on July 3.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is published. The novel sold 300,000 copies within three months and was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.”
