    Abolished Slavery in the US. President Lincoln approved it.
  • Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. The South didn't trust Lincoln, even though he said he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the South.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes

    South believed in States Rights. If states voluntarily joined the United States, then they should be able to voluntarily leave as well
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter

    The Civil War started because the South's attack on Fort Sumter. It was a 2 day battle.
  • Battle of Bull Run/Manassas

    Battle of Bull Run/Manassas

    The Union wanted to capture the South's capital because it is the power place in the South. The North now has to state taking the war more serious and they don't see war as good anymore.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Known as the bloodiest war. They fought all day but nothing was happening, just people dying. First major win in the North.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Battle of Fredericksburg

    McLellan was replaced by General Burnside after Antietam. After the lost of Antietam, Lee moved his army back into Virginia.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln was hesitant to free slaves. Only freed slaves in South. Lead the most famous of the all black regiments.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg

    Lee tries the Antietam strategy again. Invade the North and make them give up. Lee crossed into Pennsylvania where there were a supply of shoes. Then Lees troops ran into Union troops.

    Vicksburg was the last stronghold of the Confederates on the Mississippi River. Victory at Vicksburg opened up the "deep South" to Union control.

    Most famous of the all black regiments. Attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina.

    They had one of the most famous speeches in the Gettysburg address, and it was only 2 minutes long. 3,500 soldiers burned.
  • Sherman’s March to the Sea

    Sherman’s March to the Sea

    A war not just against enemy troops, but against anything that supports the enemy. They had total war were they destroy everything the South built.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    The civil war ended in a small town called Appomattox court house. 620,000 people died spent a lot of money, and destroyed a lot of things.
