  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Proposed that a line that slavery couldn't pass in the middle of the country. Helped the north and south calm down and kept the country together.
  • Nat Turner Slave Rebellion

    Nat Turner Slave Rebellion
    Slave that led a rebellion that set off a massacre of 200 black men. The rebellion killed between 50 and 60 white men and a handful of black men.
  • War with Mexico

    War with Mexico
    U.S wanted a to expand more to the west. The led to a unneeded war with mexico. The U.S blames Mexico for starting it but the U.S went into mexico and made it seem like they we attacking mexico.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    This act prohibited expansion of slavery into any territory acquired by the U.S. This a start to abolishing slavery and cause states to start to succeed.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Laws passed to stop the fighting between the north and the south. Help make the north and the south happy. North wanted to be free and south wanted to have slavery.

    Law that made it where if a slave escaped to the free states they could be captured and returned to the original slave owner. This helped calm the south down.

    Book that described what life was like as a slave. Opened the eyes of the north. Made the people in the north see how slavery really was and made the north want to abolish slavery even more.

    Laws passed that allowed the people of Kansas and Nebraska to pick weather or not they wanted to be a slave state.

    Series of violent civil confrontations in Kansas Territory. It was a battle between the people that wanted slavery and the people that wanted slavery abolished.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott tries to sue the federal court. The court rules that hes not allowed to because he isn't a U.S citizen. This showed that the misoriey compromise wasn't fair.
  • John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John brown leads a group of people to take over an armory with intentions to cause a revolt of slaves since there was more slaves than whites. This eventually failed because the slaves didn't join them and they eventually died.

    Lincoln wins the 1860 presidential election. Made the south mad because he had a history of not favoring slavery. Eventually led to the south succeeding.

    South Carolina secedes
    South Carolina secedes and is the first to do it. The did it because Abraham was elected and they knew that he had a history of not liking slavery.
