  • Missouri Compromise

    Allowed Missouri to enter Union as a slave stateand Maine to enter as a free state. Outlawed slavery in any territories or states north of 36 degrees 30` latitude
  • Wilmot Proviso

    A document stating that neither slaveryor involuntary servitude should ever exist in an party of the territory
  • Compromise of 1850

    California was able to enter Union as free state. Rest of Mexican Cession was divided into two territories; popular sovereignty would determine whether to allow slavery
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    divide the remainder of Louisiana Purchase into two territories (Kansas & Nebraska) and allowed people to decide in each territory on slavery.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre

    John Brown and his men killed 5 pro-slavery men in Kansas
  • John brown's raid

    He and his men took over the arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia in hopes of starting a slave rebellion
  • Fort Sumpter

    Federal Outpost in Charleston, South Carolina that was attacked by Confederate troops, beginning the Civil War
  • Battle of Antietam

    Known as the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    A key battle that finally turned the tide against Confederates
  • Appomattox Courthouse

    General Lee surrened to General Grant, therefore ending the Civil War
