The pony express was a mail system back in 1860's.
The pony express hired horseback riders to go long distances, switch horses along the way, and face many dangers. People on the pony express had to be willing to risk their lives to get the job done. After the widespread use of the telegraph though, the pony express shut down. -
CLose to the end of 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the US.He was part of the newly made republican party called the Republican Party, and supported the Union. He wasn't for stopping slavery, but he was against it spreading. His election led to the CIvil War as southern states thought that it would be unfair because the president wasn't against slavery spreading.

Before the Civil war, the South thought that having a anti-slavery person as the US president, it would maybe outlaw their slavery and slaves. After Abraham Lincoln was elected as he was against the spread of slavery, the 6 states that had ceded decided to form the Confederacy, and elected their own president, leading to the CIvil War.

The battle of Bull Run was the first battle in the civil war were the southern states broke of into the confederacy, and the Union went to war with them. This battle took place in the confederate state of Virginia. The battle took place in the town of Manassas. The confederates won this battle against the Union, as this was significant as people at the beginning thought the Union would quickly end the war.

They used to use ships made out of wood, but they could be easily sunk. This new type of ship was made out of iron, not wood, so it was way more harder to sink. The confederate Merrimack started the battle by firing at Union wooden ships. The next day they both kept fighting with their ironclads, but both ships eventually left the fight. no side won.
