  • Declaration of Independence

    The DoI declares independence from Great Britain. The DoI outline rights taken away from the colonists by the King and Parliament.It was written by Thomas Jefferson, who used the ideas of natural rights proposed by John Locke
  • Alien & Sedition Acts

    John Adams passed the Alien & Sedition Acts
    A series of laws known collectively as the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed by the Federalist Congress in 1798 and signed into law by President Adams. These laws included new powers to deport foreigners as well as making it harder for new immigrants to vote.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Calhoun tried to nullify the protective tariff for South Carolina. Issue of States Rights continues to brew.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter occured on April 12, 1861 and was the first battle of the Civil War. It lasted one day. It occurs in the Charleston Harbor at the Union Fort of Fort Sumter. The fall of the fort leads to Confederate control of the Fort. This is important to US history because it is the start of the Civil War.
