    Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. Sped up cotton production and expanded slavery. Helped economy in north and south.

    illegalized spread of slavery into Louisiana territory. 1852.
  • Erie Canal

    Erie Canal
    Connected Lake Erie to the Hudson river. Expedited shipment of southern produce. Also brought northerners to the West which changed the politics of the region. Everyone started investing in new canals because of its success but no other canal was as successful.

    Slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. Rebel slaves killed more slaveowners than any other rebellion. Aftermath: fear, execution of many innocent slave, lost rights

    Founded by six alcoholics in 1840. Their movement against drinking spread all around the country. They focused on the individual drinker.

    Stated that any land gained from Mexico should be slave-free. Was not successful in congress but became battle cry of abolitionists.
