    fort sumte' >fort sumterAfter the election of Abraham Lincoln, some of the south decided to leave the union. The south then decided that all forts in the south were their property while the north thought that they were federal property. After a 3 day bombardment of the fort sumter, the northern troops stationed there were forced to surrender to the south. This was the first battle in the Civil War.

    Lincoln started trying to raise an amry of 75,000 people. The south took this as a threat that the government was trying to declair to the south. This caused the south to become uneasy and a few more southern states to leave the union.

    After the defeat at fort sumter, the north wanted to stop general beuregarde from attacking again the same way. Unfortenatly for the north, a spy found out about these plans. The spy warned Beuregarde about the coming northern army. As the battle started, the north seemed to have the upper hand. It wasn't until the apperence of general Jackson that the south was losing.     This is the first time in history when two ironclad ships faced off. Both of the ships servived the hours of battle that occured until both ran out of ammo and were forced to stop the battle. The ironclads were both fully covered in iron stopping all incoming fire.

    On this day, president Lincoln gave a speech and freed all the slaves in the south. Eventhough the south considered themselves a new nation, the president still considered them part of the union.

    After general mclellen allowed the escape of general lee, he was discharged, a new general was placed in power. After a defeat at fredgricksberg, this general was dismissed as well.
