    Linclon was a Republician. The reason he was elected was that the Democrats were split in half and had two presidential candidates running in the election and therefore neither candidate could garner enough votes to win an election. His election prompted 7 sothern states to form the Confederacy. The Civil War began a few months after he was sworn into office.

    Texas secedes frim Union
    Texas secedes from the Union in order to join to Confederate States. This added man-power to the Confederate army. Texas was mainly a supply state for the Confederate forces untill mid 1863. Texas regiments fought in every major battle throughout the civil war.
  • Houston kicked out of Office

    Houston kicked out of Office
    When Texas seceded from the Union, all of the officals were to sign an oath to the Confederate States. Sam Houston wouldn't swear alligiance to the Confederate States and was replaced. Houston had opposed sectionalism and extremists in the North and South. He didn't belive that war was the solution and therefore did not sign the oath.

    Battle of fort Sumter
    The Battle of Fort Sumter was the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina. This battle started the American Civil War. On April 12, 1861, General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces around Charleston Harbor, opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. On April 13 Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day.
  • Battle of Galveston

    Battle of Galveston
    Confederate forces attacked occupying Union troops in the city of Galveston. One of the Union ships ended up grounded in a sandbar. A three hour truce was called for, but Union Fleet Comander ignored the negotiation and attempted to destroy their ship with explosives than have it fall into enemy hands. Several Union troops were killed when the explosives went off, and the on shore troops thought that the ships were surrendering, So they laid down their arms. Galveston was in the South's hands.

    Having concentrated his army around the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Confederate General Lee awaited the approach of Union Gen. George G. Meade’s forces. The battle lasted for three days. Lee's second invasion of the North had failed, and had resulted in heavy casualties; an estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing after Gettysburg.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    Union flotilla of four gunboats and seven troop transports steamed into Sabine Pass and up the Sabine River with the intention of attacking Fort Griffin and landing troops to begin occupying Texas. As the gunboats approached Fort Griffin, they came under fire from six cannons. Fort Griffin’s small force of 44 men, under command of Lt. Dowling, forced the Union ships to retire and captured about 200 prisoners. Union operations in the area ceased. This was a Victory for the South.
  • Red River Campaign

    This was a series of battles from March 10 – May 22, 1864. At this time, the outcome of the Civil War seemed to be decided in the Union's favor. The South had fought long and hard aginst the Union, but the military prowess of the Confederates was not enough to prevail against the vast resorces of the North. The Union had wanted to destroy the Confederate troops in this campaign, but failed awfully.
  • End of Civil War

    End of Civil War
    After four years of fighting the Civil War, Lee knew it was time to put an end to it. In the weeks that followed, Confederate forces surrerendered, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured. The era that had began 4 years ago at Fort Sumter was over. The Federal army had finally won, and it was time for the people of the North and South to start rebuilding their lives.
  • Battle of Palmito Ranch

    Battle of Palmito Ranch
    This was the last battle of the Civil War. There was an agreement for no fighting at the Rio Grande. However the Union didn't honor that and attacked the Confederate trrops while they were at White and Palmito Ranches. The Confederates had less troops and were taken by suprise. However they still prevailed. This battle was actually 34 days after the Confederate Leader surrendered, but the troops in the south didn't know.
  • Juneteenth

    Juneteenth
    The Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas. They gave news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The reactions of the people ranged from shock to happiness. Some slaves stayed and became employees of their former masters, while others packed up and left to rejoin family members. It is still celebrated today. This year will mark its 150th anniversary.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    Reconstruction Ends
    Some Northerners came to the South to help set up a new way of life for the former slaves. There were first going to try to reconstruct the railroad system, but failed in the Panic of 1873. There was alot of mistrust between the political parties. When the Democrats regained controll of the House of Representitives, the reconstruction efforts ended. The Reconstruction was considered a failure because the south became poverty stricken and its economy relied on agriculture.
