    Election of Lincoln
    The election in 1860, Abraham Lincoln had won the party's presidential nomination. Lincoln was against Douglas, who represented the northern fraction of a large part of the Democratic party. Lincoln received only 40% of the popular vote but still defeated the three other candidates. After the election Abraham Lincoln had become the 16th president.
  • TX Secedes from Union

    TX Secedes from Union
    Texas was the 7th state to secede from the union. After they seceded, they joined the confederate States of America. Over the objections of their governor, Sam Houston, the Texans who voted to leave the Union did so, and texas did not share the rising secessionist sentiments of other Southern states. However, events swayed many Texans to the secessionist cause.
  • Houston kicked out of office

    Houston kicked out of office
    Houston studied law and became a lawyer, and eventually got into politics. He moved to Texas and served as the governor, he tried to make Texas avoid seceding the Union, but failed. Then Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederate states of America. He died July 26, 1863.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    On April 12, 1861 Confederate forces around the Charleston Harbor, opened fire on the Union garrison. At 2:30 pm on April 13 major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and evacuated the next day. The battle at Fort Sumter was the first battle of the American Civil War. Today, Fort Sumter is very famous for being the first battle in the American Civil War.

    Battle of Galveston
    Confederate forces attacked Union troops from the city of Galveston, Texas. A three hour truce was called for by Magruder, but Union Commander William B. Renshaw ignored the offer. The Galveston As a part of the Union blockage, Commander William B. Renshaw wanted to surrender the battle of Galveston. So he led his squadron of eight ships to Galveston harbor to demand surrender.

    Battle of Gettysburg
    The battle of Gettysburg involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war. It is also considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War. Union forces Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee had won the victory of this battle. The battle ended on July 3rd.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    The Sabine Pass lays at the mouth of the Sabine river on the gulf of Texas. In September 1861 the Confederets constructed a major fort there, and in September 1862 a Union captured the fort. Then the Yankees controlled most of the texas coast, so later a confederate hero was assigned a difficult task of expelling the Federals from the Sabine Pass. The Confederate chased the Yankee ships into open water, then both Union ships soon surrendered.

    The Red River Champaign had one of the biggest military fiascos of the civil war, where it began as a combined Union force. The combined Union force was made up of riverboats and infantry, moving up the red river in Louisiana. The month long champaign was poorly managed and achieved none of the objections set forth by Union Commanders. The Red River Champaign was ended may 22 1864.

    The Civil War Started on april 12, 1861. Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, Commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi. That was a sign that the surrender terms were offered by Union negotiators. With Smiths surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history. Four long years later, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate dead.

    The Battle of Palmito Ranch is commonly known as the last battle of the American Civil War. The battle was fought on the banks of the Rio Grande. Although they took some prisoners, the attack was repulsed to the next day by Confederate Col. John Salmon Ford. The battle was claimed as a Confederate victory.

    Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. this celebration is celebrated on june 19 because that was the day that the enslaved were free. Singing traditional songs written by African Americans is a traditional way people celebrate Juneteenth. Some other ways people celebrate Juneteenth is by going to parades, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties and many more.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    Reconstruction Ends
    The political battle between President Johnson and Congress over southern reconstruction came to a confrontation. The Republicans in Congress were not content with curbing Johnson's' authority. By overriding his vetoes, they wanted to remove him altogether. Under the laws of time, removing Johnson meant that Ben Wade, the president of the Senate, would become president.
