    President Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the Union/US. He was elected because in that particular election, there were 2 democrats, and 1 republican running. This split the votes for the democrats, and caused Abraham Lincoln to become president. The significance of Lincoln's election was that it led to the 13th amendment, Abolished Slavery.

    Texas secedes from Union
    Many Texans believed that slavery was vital to their state's future growth and economy. This caused Texas to seceed. Sam Houston was replaced as governer of Texas because he refused to take the oath of alligence to the Confederacy. Texas was the 7th state tto seceed.

    Houston Kicked out of Office
    Houston was kicked out of office because he rufused to say the oath that officially tied Texas to the Confederacy. He refused because he thought that the industrialized, populated Union had a strong advantage and would likely win over the south. Edward Clark replaced him in office. It effected the outcome of the civil war because it was an event that led to Texas becoming a part of the Confederacy.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    General P.G.T. Beauregard was in command of the Confederate forces around Charles Harbour. They opened fire on the Union Garrison holding Fort Sumter. Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander and Unionist, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day. The Confederacy won and the Union lost.

    As part of the Union blockade of the Texas coast, Commander William B. Renshaw led his squadron of eight ships into Galveston harbor. He demanded surrender of the most important port in Texas. When one of the ships ran into a sandbar, Renshaw ordered for it to be blown up with explosives rather than fall into enemy hands. The Union won and the Confederacy lost.
  • Battle of Palamito Ranch

    Battle of Palamito Ranch
    On May 13, 1865, more than a month after the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee, the last land action of the Civil War took place at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville. The Union had 500 infantry, while the Confederacy had 300. The Union's commander was Theadore H. Barrett, and the Confederacy's commander was John "Rip" Ford. The Union won and the Confederacy surrendered.
  • Juneteenth

    Juneteenth
    uneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans

    Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War. After a great victory over Union forces at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee marched his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. Lee ordered an attack on the enemy’s center at Cemetery Ridge. The assault, known as “Pickett’s Charge,” managed to pierce the Union lines but eventually failed, and Lee was forced to withdraw to Virginia. The Union won and the Confederacy lost.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    a Union flotilla of four gunboats and seven troop transports went into Sabine Pass and up the Sabine River with the intention of reducing Fort Griffin and landing troops to begin occupying Texas. As the gunboats approached Fort Griffin, they came under fire from Confederate cannons. Fort Griffin’s small force of 44 men, under command of Lt. Richard W. Dowling, forced the Union flotilla to retire and captured the gunboat and about 200 prisoners. The Union lost and the Confederacy won.

    The Red River Campaign or Red River Expedition comprised a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana. The Union commander was Nathaniel Banks and the Confederadte commander was Richard Taylor. The Union began with 30,000 infantry, while the Confederacy only had 15,000. The Union won and the Confederacy lost.
  • End of Civil War

    End of Civil War
    Lee's troops ultimately became exhausted defending this line because they were too thinned out. Grant then took advantage of the situation and launched attacks on this thirty mile and poorly defended front. This ultimately led to the surrender of Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. Many other Confederate surrenders followed. The Union won the war and the Confederacy lost.
