Congress wanted to expand slavery into the new western territory. Jefferson thought slavery would die away so they weren't worried about it. Missouri became a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. That balanced out the Congress. Thomas Jefferson considered it to be the knell of the union.

Slave named Nat Turner and his rebels (70) killed 60 white people in Virginia. Military suppressed the rebellion after two days of terror. Then 55 slaves were killed cuz of what they did.

The comp prevented territorial expansion of slavery while strengthing the Fugitive Slave Act. That act compelled the North to return escaped slaves to the South.
