  • The Missouri Compromise

    Congress wanted to expand slavery into the new western territory. Jefferson thought slavery would die away so they weren't worried about it. Missouri became a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. That balanced out the Congress. Thomas Jefferson considered it to be the knell of the union.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Slave named Nat Turner and his rebels (70) killed 60 white people in Virginia. Military suppressed the rebellion after two days of terror. Then 55 slaves were killed cuz of what they did.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    After the Mexican war. After the gold rush of California. Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas managed to broker a shaky accord with the Compromise of 1850. The comp prevented territorial expansion of slavery while strengthing the Fugitive Slave Act. That act compelled the North to return escaped slaves to the South.
  • Fugitive Slave Acts: 1850 LAW

    By mid 1800s thousands of slaves had come into the free states by the Underground RailroadCongress passed a revised fugitive slave act in 1850. The Compromise of 1850 forcibly compelled citizens to assist in the capture of runaway slaves.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe's fiction exploration of slave life was a cultural senseation. The north felt like their eyes had been opened to horros of slavery. Was second best selling book in America in 19th century. It widened the division between the North and South.

    Bleeding Kansas

    A bunch of people from the north and south flooded Kansas with anti and pro slavery votes to try to sway the vote. 56 people died over the 7 years because of sporadic outbreaks.
  • Abe Lincolns Election

    Abe Lincoln was elected by a considerable margin even though he wasn't on a lot of Southern ballots. South Carolina secede from the Union. Six more states also did in spring 1861. Was first republican to win.

    P.G.T Beauregard a general for the south tells the north to surrender but the north refuses to do so. After Anderson refuses to do they're forced to surrender fort Sumter after shooting at each other for a long period of time
