    Invention of the cotton gin
    With the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney, the south became a single crop nation and with the single crop slaves were needed. The North was more associated with city life rather than agriculture, and most were against slavery. So many differences were there and both took a part in the beginning of the war.
  • Slave and non-slave states

    Slave and non-slave states
    There was tention built up between the North and South between which new emerging states were to be Slave or non-slave states. All started during the Kansas-Nebraska Act when it was decided upon popular sovereignty to determine whether states are slave or not. Pro-slavery individuals poured in and were called border ruffians who wanted to have slaves. Which ended in a fight between Charles sumner and South Carolina senator Preston Brooks who beat sumner over the head with a cane till he fainted.

    Growth of the Abolitionist Movement
    Northernerns became more and more against slavery. Weekly meetings were held to decide and decieve to end slavery. So now a growing hatred was imminant between the north and south.
  • Nat Turner's rebellion

    Nat Turner's rebellion
    Turner led an uprising with 70 other slaves and they killed 60 white people. Then militia and artillary settled the rebellion down. 55 slaves including Turner were tried and executed

    The act forced any fedral official who did not arrest a runaway slave to be fined.

    When Northern factories got merchandise from england they were able to tax heavily on the products when selling to the South. Which angered the South.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was published
    The book was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It portrayed the evils of slavery and was a best seller. It had a huge impact on how northerners viewed the subject of slavery.
  • Dred Scott decision

    Dred Scott decision
    He lost his case proving that he should be free because he was held as a slave in a free state. The court said it could not be seen because even though he was enslaved in a free state, he still held no property and was considered still owned by his owner. It ultimatley heated the situation up more for there to be an end to slavery.
  • John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry
    John brown, a big abolishonist led a group of 17 including 5 black men and raid the arsenal called Harper's Ferry. He wanted to start a slave uprising with the captured weapons. Although his group were finally surrounded and many men were killed or captured. Brown was then tried and hanged.
